HUDSON, N.Y. — Public Sale Auction House is offering its own unique twist on the midcentury craze with an upcoming auction that features a collection of Pop art items from visual artist Cary “Candy Ass” Leibowitz’s Harlem brownstone, the original furnishings from a 1954 Long Island home and many Midcentury Modern items sourced from local homes.
The auction, curated by Public Sale owners Gabriel Constantine and Tarah Gay and titled “Midcentury Strong,” is the latest offering from the auction house. Bidding begins at noon on Saturday, October 9, with an in-person preview, October 2-8, from 10 am to 5 pm and on October 9 at 9 am.
New York City- and Hudson-based artist Cary Leibowicz, also known in the art world by the moniker “Candy Ass,” contributed more than 75 different lots to the auction, and a portion of Public Sale’s floor display was set aside for an installation featuring several of these items over a backdrop of vintage wallpaper. To those familiar with Leibowicz’s eclectic body of work, this distinct collection of folk art and naïve paintings, Pop art, branded trash cans and other kitschy decorative elements, colorful vintage Op art wallpaper and flashes of Victorian ornamentation will come as no surprise. It includes a pair of large Ben Shahn lithographs, two rare 1970s Wendell Castle black molar chairs and a neoclassical secretary desk by John Mascheroni that was once featured on the cover of the New York Times design magazine.
The furnishings from a home in the Long Island hamlet of Dix Hills came into Public Sale’s orbit in one of those rare instances when a home functions like a time capsule, with its original decor almost as well-preserved as the day it was first installed — in this case probably soon after the home was built in 1954. Dozens of Danish modern desks, chairs, credenzas, shelving and other cabinetry and case pieces impart a feeling of warmth to the Public Sale preview floor with the smooth luster of their dark wood finishes.
The Modern Strong auction will be conducted online only, with no in-person bidding available. Absentee bids, phone bids and internet bidding will be available. As many absentee and phone bids as desired can be arranged.
Public Sale Auction House is at 90 Green Street. For more information, 518-966-7253 or www.public-sale.com.
