GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Roland Auctions is presenting a two-day auction event featuring the collection of prominent Southampton, N.Y., antiques dealer Jay Waldmann, whose shop Waldmann Jewelry and Antiques graced Main Street in Southampton Village for more than 20 years, on Friday, November 5, and Saturday, November 6, at 10 am EST.
Previews for this auction event, offering more than 1,000 lots, will be conducted Wednesday November 3, and Thursday, November 4, from 10 am 6 pm. Waldmann’s was the premiere dealer in the Hamptons, specializing in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century paintings, decorative arts, silver and estate jewelry. After being a Hamptons mainstay since 1998, Jay Waldmann recently sold the building in Southampton and is now offering his collection for the first time in auction.
As part of the same auction event, Roland Auctions NY will also feature a large collection of jewelry from a private Upper East Side collection, while some of the more unique pieces from the Jay Waldmann collection include a rare, large-scale American whalebone ship model, circa 1850, monumental carved bone ship model, of maritime interest, possibly a prisoner-of-war accented with a 37 Stars and Stripes US flag, with bone, cord and iron details, on a wood plinth ($30/50,000); a suit of armor, Nuremberg, Germany, circa 1570, for field use, original in all parts; the helmet with a one-piece forged bell and a pointed visor, the chest piece with rust hook and rosette-shaped forge’s mark, the entire arm and leg set with shoulder ($20/30,000); and a Heyman Dullaert (1636-1684) “St Jerome in his Study” oil on panel, Seventeenth Century, an interior scene with trompe l’oeil elements ($8/12,000).
Also in the fine art arena, Roland is offering a Seventeenth Century oil on canvas attributed to Pieter de Hooch (Dutch, 1629-1684). “Courtyard Scene” is a scene of a festive gathering around a table with figures enjoying music and seafood ($40/60,000); and an Adolph Schreyer (German 1828-1899) painting, “Arabs on Horseback,” oil on canvas, an Orientalist scene of Arab men on horseback, signed lower left ($5/8,000).
Other highlights include a vintage Louis Vuitton trunk, early Twentieth Century ($5/8,000), a large architectural model of a spiral staircase ($800-$1,200), a pair of painted metal orange trees ($1/2,000), a large pair of Tang dynasty-style ceramic horses ($1/2,000) and a Chanel classic leather handbag with chain and leather strap ($2,5/3,500).
Also offered is one of seven vintage gilt wood vitrines from Caldwell Jewelry Co. ($1/1,500 each), along with a Professor Josef Wackerle painted Nymphenburg porcelain vase with floral motifs over a striped ground with black borders ($800-$1,200) and a rare Tiffany bronze planter ($600/800).
