MARION, MASS. — Marion Antique Auctions will present a fine art, estate and antiques auction on November 13. The sale will bring a whole host of interesting items, ranging from the late Renaissance all the way through Midcentury Modern pieces. The auction features Jensen sterling jewelry in original boxes, as well as an elaborate jeweled lady’s pocket watch on a dragon-form watch pin. Sixteenth Century through Nineteenth Century engravings and lithographs, including an engraving by Michel Lasne (French, 1590-1667) depicting a dueling scene, will also be featured.
Additionally, there will be six paintings by C.H. Gifford, one of which depicts fishermen on the shore of Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven. Other art concerning Fairhaven include an etching by Lemuel D. Eldred of the New Bedford Harbor with the Fairhaven bridge in the background, along with a Sidney Richmond Burley painting depicting the Fairhaven skyline.
More American pieces include early Nineteenth Century samplers from a collector of American samplers, as well as sailor-made scrimshaw pieces, one by the “Bank Note Engraver.” Also included are a plethora of rare Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century Native American pieces, including beaded Plains moccasins, Northwest Coast rattles and jacket, carved Inuit pieces, as well as Navajo and Pueblo pottery.
The auction also is putting forward rare books on Western expansion and Cuba, as well as maps of New Bedford, Fairhaven, the West, Mexico and more. There is a selection of Civil War documents, CDVs and signatures.
The sale boasts a selection of furniture from the Eighteenth Century all the way up into the late Twentieth Century. Particularly interesting pieces include a late Eighteenth Century Chippendale slant lid desk, possibly by a Boston maker, which features a hidden locking compartment. Along with this, there are a number of midcentury pieces, both Danish and American, including pieces by Borge Mogensen, LaBarge, Paul McCobb, Henning Sorenson, Hans Olsen and others. Other midcentury lots include three pieces related to Alexander Calder: a colored lithograph signed and numbered 32/90, “Ellie’s” or “Grazing Elephants” sculpture after Calder and a hand-hammered brass belt buckle made by Calder for his niece, with provenance.
There are five lots of late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century clothing, most of which has never been worn, and had been stored in an attic trunk, wrapped in newspapers from the 1890s to the 1910s. From the same estate came unused yardage of antique fabric in rare colors and prints, as well as elaborate vanity sets in their original boxes.
Elaborate late Nineteenth Century automatons and music boxes will be available, including the much-coveted singing bird automatons and boxes. Most interesting, perhaps, is an 1890s papier mache monkey, dressed in Eighteenth Century court attire, which, when wound, smokes a cigarette and lifts his glasses to his eyes, possibly made by the House of Phalibois.
Also offered for sale are many pounds of gold and silver coins, many of which are graded, as well as mint sets, and a huge numbers of pennies. Elaborate flatware sets will also be available, and individual sterling pieces of considerable import, not the least of which is a rare Eighteenth Century Charleston, S.C., silver ladle by Moreau Sarrazin.
All items are fresh to the market, most of which are offered without a reserve.
The auction will begin at 10 am. Viewing will be available both two days prior, Thursday and Friday, from 11 am to 6 pm, as well as Saturday from 8 am to 9:30 am.
