NEW YORK CITY – Auctions at Showplace will continue the fall auction season with a sale on November 21. The sale will feature a diverse offering of objects that conjure Park Avenue elegance. The sale includes Old Master paintings and opulent antique furniture, along with costume jewelry and luxury goods from prime New York metropolitan area estates
Highlights begin with a French Louis XVI period pair of three-light figural candelabras in ormolu, mounted on white and bleu-turquin marble pedestals, circa 1780. Also of note is an Eighteenth Century Russian or Continental School portrait on canvas depicting a gentleman recipient of the Order of St Andrew with a white dog. The piece is perhaps Ferdinand I (1751-1825), known as Ferdinand IV of the Kingdom of Naples and Ferdinand III of the Kingdom of Sicily; later known as Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.
Also of note is a pair of rare Italian rococo armchairs (poltrone da parata), circa 1740, with giltwood frames ornately carved with rocaille decoration, red silk velvet upholstery with gold threading. Northern Italian armchairs of such grand scale as the present ones are usually called poltrone da parata; similar to the French fauteuils à la reine, these armchairs were displayed alongside the walls of large salons in Roman palazzos.
Furnishings include two lots, each a pair, of mid-Eighteenth Century northern Italian baroque giltwood fauteuils a la reine. Also of note is a French Louis XIV manner large marble top console table in untreated wood, sculpted with mascarons, scroll work, architectural elements, dolphins, acanthus leaves and other flora.
Lighting includes a mid-Nineteenth Century French Louis XVI-style neoclassical eight-light chandelier with an ormolu bronze frame hung all over with rock crystal and smoke quartz crystal drops centering a baluster and terminating in a ball finial. Next are a pair of French Charles X gilt bronze wall sconces set with rock crystal prisms and cut glass drip pans. The sconces were later drilled for electrification but are currently not electrified. Lighting highlights end with a pair of Maison Bagues French pair of sconces with rock crystal birds and foliage on brass frames.
Fine art continues with a collection of Old aster and antique European paintings. First is an Italian School Old Master painting, circa Seventeenth Century, depicting Saint Paul the Hermit on his knees in prayer adoring a cross, being fed by a raven, next to a standing Antony the Great depicted in black holding a crucifix and lilies, and a cherub in upper left corner. Next is an Old Master Flemish School depiction of “Bathsheba at her Bath,” depicting a seated nude woman in front of a mirror, an attendant brushing her hair. Next is an oil on canvas “Portrait of Robert Bertie, Fourth son of James Earl of Abingdon,” attributed to Mary Beale (English, 1633-1699). The piece bears various inscriptions and partial paper labels on reverse, including an intact Nineteenth Century restorer’s label indicating the painting was relined in 1866. Other works of note include paintings by Arturo Orselli and Austrian painter Carl Froschl along with a bronze by Paul Dubois.
Decorative arts highlights include a pair of Eighteenth Century miniature oval portraits of Queen Maria Carolina and Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies (1752-1814), the king adorned with the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Each piece is housed in Victorian blackened silver and 18K gold filigree frames with diamonds, rubies and enamel. Next is a Nineteenth Century Italian Grand Tour micromosaic plaque depicting a pastoral scene with a man and woman surrounded by donkey, sheep and goats after Francesco Londonio (French, 1723-1783). It is followed by a Nineteenth Century KPM hand-painted porcelain plaque depicting “Le Retour de Pelerinage a la Madone de l’Arc” after Leopold Robert (Swiss, 1794-1835), a festive figural scene with musicians, children and oxen in the background.
Next are three lots of antique Russian icons, including one depicting the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) with her hands raised in the orans position and with the image of the Child Jesus, over the three Holy Hierarchs, polychrome on wood panel carved with arch design, likely late Nineteenth Century.
Perfect for the start of the holiday season, the sale features a collection of jewelry and luxury pens. Featured items include a pair of vintage Kieselstein-Cord 18K yellow and white gold “Angel in My Window” diamond drop clip earrings with a carved high relief angel motif surrounded by pave round brilliant-cut diamonds and bezel-set drop diamonds. Next is a vintage 18K yellow gold Rolex ladies Datejust watch with a textured bezel and a jubliee bracelet. It is followed by a vintage 1950s Jaeger LeCoultre 18K white gold diamond ladies watch, set with 59 round brilliant-cut diamonds.
Also featured are a vintage Angela Cummings platinum and diamond oblong oval open link bracelet with central link pave-set on either side with 72 diamonds total and a Kutchinsky 18K yellow gold textured bird pin accented with round brilliant-cut diamonds and a ruby eye. The sale also includes luxury pens by makers, including Namiki, Omas, Montblanc, Cartier, Parker and Aurora.
