A group of custom Florence Knoll furniture and a massive 24-foot-long George Nelson CSS wall unit come from 936 Fifth Avenue, New York City.
Day 2 showcases a selection of antique furnishings from three estates, including English Georgian pieces from 160 East 81st Street, New York City, French and Continental period rococo furniture from the estate of June Noble Gibson, Connecticut, and a group of American Aesthetic Movement furniture, featuring a Tiffany Neo-Gothic grandfather clock from a private New Jersey institution.
Old Masters to early Modern art from the Litsa Tsitsera collection include a Sixteenth Century oil on panel by a follower of Luis de Morales, a monumental, 7-foot-long Eighteenth Century Epitaphios icon, a Giovanni Battista Tiepolo drawing formerly from the collection of the Palace of Caserta, Sicily, and oil paintings by Maurice de Vlaminck and Claude Venard.
Other art highlights include a Rodin bronze from the estate of art dealer Sam Salz, a JMW Turner oil painting from the estate of June Noble Gibson and original works by Tsuguharu Foujita and Peder Mork Monsted.
Day 3 opens with Asian arts, including a group of Chinese porcelains, paintings and Neolithic pottery from the estate of professor of Chinese art Philip Gould. Chinese works from the Collection of Edith and Edward “Ted” Nathanson feature a large Ming-era Guanyin grotto sculpture and a carved jade libation vessel. Han- and Tang-era pottery come from the collection of Lester Wunderman and early Qing-era Chinese huanghuali furniture from the estate of Peter Schub.
The second half of the day features more than 100 photographs from the Schub collection. A revered photo agent, Schub negotiated for some of the most prominent photographers of the Twentieth Century, including Irving Penn, Peter Beard, William Klein and Anthony Armstrong Jones. Works from all four artists are represented. The collection consists of original working prints, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, that the agent lent to fashion and lifestyle magazines, or for inclusion in monographs and book collections. The sale offers vintage examples of seminal images, such as Penn’s Vogue cover “Girl in Black and White” from 1950, his portrait of Pablo Picasso and multiple works from Peter Beard’s landmark 1968 monograph “The End of the Game.”
