Across the world, there are a small number of artisans who see the letters upon a page as more than a mere means to represent a thought or idea. These printers harken back to a time when paper, font and bindings mattered. Their works are a joy to behold, touch and read. The December 3rd live and in-person Connecticut River Book Auction offers this wonderous gestalt in bookmaking for the discerning bibliophile. For example, there is Forgeois’ (1984) “Three Stories from the Old Testament Jonah, Judith, Ruth,” published by Allen Press in 1984.
This copy is a part of the Deluxe Limited Edition in a cloth clamshell custom case. Also by the Allen Press and issued in 1978 is their printing of “Antigone” in a Deluxe Limited Edition of 130 copies. Perhaps, a copy of “Almost a Minister A Romance of the Oregon Hopyards.” by Loyd Haberly issued in 1942 and limited to 375 copies will suit your reading tastes. If not that then consider a 1903 copy of Firbank’s “Two Early Stories,” by Albondocani Press.
For those with an interest in history, this auction offers a 1st edition copy of “King Potatau An Account of the Life of Potatau Te Wherowhero the First Maori King,” and a nice collection of U.S. flags from the turn of the last century. There are several interesting picture lots including two by Erwin Smith taken during a trip of the Southwest with George Pattulo at the Matador ranch in Texas and the Turkey Trot in Sonora, Mexico.
Finally, we have a several lots of prints and photographs including a signed LeRoy Neiman poster, a fine framed late 1800s fireman’s portrait and a fun grouping of ads. Oh, did we mention we have a really nice looking 1883 framed Currier & Ives Print of “The Grand New Steamboat Pilgrim, the Largest in the World?”
