PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — Bakker Auctions will conduct its winter live online fine arts auction on Saturday, December 11, starting at 1 pm. This auction features artworks from local estates and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors. Leading the sale is a portrait of Joel W. Burdick by Charles Webster Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art ($10/15,000), and a small collection of works by Margaret J. Patterson being offered by a relative for the first time, including a previously unrecorded early color woodblock print, “House at Damme” ($1/1,500).
Other masterworks from the Provincetown Art Colony offered to the highest bidders include an early self-portrait by Gerrit Beneker ($1,5/2,000), “Provincetown Winter” by Bruce McKain ($3/5,000) and “Wharf with Boats” by Arthur Diehl ($3/5,000). Works by Reynolds Beal, Frank Carson, Arthur Cohen, John Hare, Tod Lindenmuth, William Littlefield, Ross Moffett, Ray Nolin, Heinrich Pfeiffer, Maurice Sterne, John Whorf, Taro Yamamoto and George Yater will be offered, as well as a selection of works by contemporary Provincetown painters, including Mark Beard, Robert Cardinal, Michael Davis, Salvatore Del Deo, John Dowd, Larry Horowitz, Chet Jones and Christopher Sousa.
The selection of works by women artists features “Winter in Provincetown” by Nancy Whorf ($6/8,000) and a woodblock print by Blanche Lazzell for a 1925 Herring Gallery Exhibition being offered together with the wood relief printing block ($4/6,000) used to create it. Paintings and watercolors by other women artists associated with the Provincetown Art Colony include Greta Allen, Martha Dunigan, Dorothy Lake Gregory, Candy Jernigan, Dorothy Loeb, Henrietta Dunn Mears, Ada Rayner and Nancy Whorf.
A leather suitcase owned by Henry Hensche filled with palettes, a pair of bronze bookends and a shell letter holder by William Boogar and a 2006 Art Strand Portfolio with 11 original works by the artist members round out the sale with something for everyone.
