NEW YORK CITY — Showplace continues the winter 2022 auction season with a grouping of 280 lots from New York City metropolitan area estates on January 23. The sale includes fine art, jewelry, silver, from New York City estates along with a collection of James Mont furniture from an Upper East Side residence furnished by Mont.
Highlights begin with an 1890 pastel on paper portrait of a woman by French Impressionist artist Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin. Next is a Steinway & Sons Victorian grand piano, serial number 71205, circa 1891, with an upholstered piano bench. Also of note is an oil on board depicting a lively market scene rendered in the Impressionist style by American painter George Luks.
The sale is centered around a collection of midcentury furniture designed by James Mont. Mont was among the most iconic designers of his era, blending the styles of Asia with Midcentury Modern and Hollywood Regency design.
The section opens with a pair of ebonized James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern D-shaped small consoles with carved ornamentation, parcel gilt decoration and with glass tops, designed circa 1960. Next is a pair of James Mont Midcentury Modern pair of carved walnut club armchairs, upholstered in peach cut plush, designed circa 1960. They are followed by a James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern low cabinet in cherry ombre lacquer and gold leaf in the Chinese modern taste, incorporating a Chinese carved giltwood figural panel. Next is a James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern dining table with an Asian motif on base and shaped edge, with two additional leaves, designed circa 1955. Also offered is a set of five James Mont dining chairs in walnut with Asian-inspired backrests and upholstered seats, designed circa 1955. Furniture highlights conclude with a James Mont ebonized and upholstered sofa in the Chinese modern taste, designed circa 1960, and a Mario Bellini for Cassina Italian Postmodern three-seater sofa in aubergine velvet upholstery.
Lighting opens with a pair of James Mont table lamps in cherry lacquer and carved wood, each mounted with a Japanese carved wood figure, with the original wooden shades, designed in circa 1960. Next is a pair of James Mont pair of molded composition table lamps, parcel gilt and parcel silvered, in the Chinese modern taste, designed circa 1960, with the original silk peplum shades. Next is an Art Nouveau ormolu and molded blue painted glass plafonnier-shaped ceiling light fixture with shell-shaped glass shades, circa 1900, originally supplied by James Mont for the estate and identified as “Lalique Chandelier” on the original receipt. It is followed by a striking James Mont gilt metal detailed cobra snake and thistle three-light table lamp and a pair of James Mont carved giltwood table lamps, designed circa 1960, composed of older elements. Also included is a James Mont ebonized and parcel gilt molded composition table lamp in shape of an Egyptian canopic jar, designed circa 1960, and a pair of James Mont table lamps in cherry lacquer and carved wood, each mounted with a Japanese carved wood figure, with the original wooden shades, designed in circa 1960.
Fine art highlights include two mixed media landscapes by Japanese artist Tatsuya Ishiodori that were removed from the 5th Avenue residence of Jill and Ken Iscol, one of which includes a label from Sigrid Freundorfer Fine Art on verso. Next is Joan Miro’s “La Pluie Matinale au Clair de Lune (Morning Rain in Moonlight),” a lithograph numbered 48 of 300. It is followed by Fernand Leger’s “Nature Morte Aux Deux Poupées,” a lithograph numbered 239 of 300. Also of note is a Charles Strain abstract bronze sculpture on a rotating base placed on a pedestal titled “Moon in Scorpio.” The sale also includes works by Franco Mueller, Marisol Escobar, Tracey Adams, Eric Lawing, Michel Frechette and Reginald Weston.
Decorative arts highlights include a pair of Italian “Big Collina” resin vases by Gaetano Pesce for Fish Design and a 1970s Livio Seguso Italian Murano art glass abstract sculpture. Also of note is a gold-filled sterling silver and Chinese jade belt buckle mounted as magnifying glass by Henry Charles Freedman. Highlights conclude with a Chinese bronze hu vase with a shouldered globular body standing on a slightly flared ring foot.
Jewelry and luxury goods will feature a vintage 1970s Bulova Accutron 14K yellow gold case day / date display wristwatch with a Speidel Stretch Flex gold-tone stainless steel band. Also of note is an Hermès Paris “Cape Cod” stainless steel Swiss-made wristwatch with origin top-stitch brown leather band and deployant buckle, a one-of-a-kind prototype Chanel button cuff bracelet and a collection of luxury Montblanc pens.
Silver seekers will find an English George III sterling silver pair of sauce boats of oval bombe form, on four paw feet, marked London LH, dated 1776. Also of note is a Tiffany & Co. pair of Art Deco footed sterling silver bowls in oblong shape, marked on the bottom (45.5 troy ounces) and a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver water pitcher (34.06 troy ounces).
