SUDBURY, MASS. — Tremont Auctions will conduct its annual spring auction on Sunday, April 24. The sale includes almost 740 lots drawn from local estates and collections. This auction will include full public preview and in-person bidding. Preview times are Wednesday, April 20 through Saturday, April 23, 10 am to 3 pm, and day of sale, Sunday, April 24, 8 to 10 am, or by appointment.
Estate silver and jewelry comprise 210 lots of the sale. Among the highlights is a rose-form Burmese ruby and diamond brooch, set in platinum and an Art Deco diamond and sapphire ring. Silver offerings include a sterling Egyptian Revival garniture by Frederick Elkington, a five-piece Tiffany & Co tea service, large Georgian tray, an Arts and Crafts tazza from Arthur Stone and more.
A selection of 250 paintings and prints will be offered. These are gathered from a longtime Boston collection, as well as a former art collector’s estate. European works include those by Fritz Zuber-Buhler, Eugene Boudin, Johan Jongkind, Barend Koekkoek, Albert Gleizes, Giuseppe de Nittis and many more. Among the selection of Old Master works will be an Elizabethan court scene with figures playing sports. Works by American artists include Edgar Payne, Frank Dudley, Paul Lauritz, Emile Gruppe, Daniel Celentano, J.J. Enneking, A.T. Hibbard, Frank Vining Smith, Marguerite Pearson, William Trost Richards and many more. Also sold will be an abstract painting by South Korean artist Ufan Lee that was given by the artist to the family’s estate. Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood are included among the collection of eight Associated American Artists lithographs. From a local home comes a J.J. Audubon aquatint of an osprey.
There is a variety of antiques and accessories, which include Grand Tour sculptures and a micromosaic, Chinese porcelain, baroque carving and terracotta panels, a French automaton and fashion doll, rare antique bottles, an Adirondack cabinet, American and European antique furniture, Nineteenth Century Chinese export wall paper, sailor-made items, Midcentury Modern furnishings and carpets.
The second session features a collection of militaria and historical items. From two local collections come Civil War items, including an important archive of original photographs from the estate of General Samuel Lawrence. The other collection includes the personal effects carried by Colonel David R. Kenyon of 7th Rhode Island. A top item is the important Confederate Naval officer’s sword for Courtney & Tennant, S.C., by Robert Mole. A collection of Nineteenth Century buttons includes a rare pre-Civil War plated Republic Star of Texas. World War I and II items include a B-17 instrument panel, a Red Raider’s bomber jacket, officer’s hats and uniforms.
