The sale includes fine art, jewelry and silver from New York City estates along with a collection of objects from several Upper East Side townhouses.
Highlights begin with a white lacquer Steinway & Sons Steinway B grand piano (serial number 576243) manufactured in 2006 that was a centerpiece in an Upper East Side townhouse. Next is an impressionist landscape drawing by Camille Pissarro. Titled “Paysage,” the chalk on paper is stamped with initials “C.P” and bears a gallery label from James Vigeveno Galleries, Los Angeles, and label marked “Collection: J. Goldschmidt, Paris” on verso. Also featured is an early Twentieth Century antique Austrian-Hungarian 14K yellow gold cigarette case, set with an oval cabochon-cut ruby expertly made with precision piano hinges and stylized “running dog” pattern borders. Also of note is an antique American Waltham Co. 14K yellow gold dual dial pocket watch with 14K yellow fob chain and black enamel gun metal hinged outer case.
Fine art opens with a Nineteenth Century oil on canvas of a young girl in a white dress by Italian painter Augusto Alberici. The piece, in an ornate frame, has provenance from the collection of the Echegoyen Martinez family, Argentina and Jo Vento Fine Paintings and Sculpture, New York. Next is a landscape on board signed Corot (Camille Jean-Baptiste Corot) and an oil on canvas depicting an American regional scene by Alfred Jacob Miller. Next is an 1864 small-scale portrait of a soldier by Spanish artist Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala with remains of an old gallery label on verso. It is followed by a duo of oil on board paintings by French painter Hippolyte Petitjean (French, 1854-1924) with stamps from Hammer Galleries on verso.
Next is an antique oil on canvas depicting a nude male figure after Eugene Delacroix. The sale also comprises a small grouping of early Nineteenth Century French School portraiture, including a painting of Anne-Maximilien de Bernard, Escuyer, with the Bernard family of Montpelier coat of arms. The sale also includes works by L. Hauser, Trevor James, Hermanus Koekkoek, Royal Hill Milleson, Richard Segalman and Frederick W. Freer.
Sculpture is highlighted by a bronze of a lion by the Nineteenth Century French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye and a late Nineteenth Century bronze bust titled “Britannia,” depicting the namesake of Britain, by Welsh sculptor James Milo Griffith.
Furnishings include a French antique pair of upholstered lounge chairs in burl wood veneer with barrel backs on cabriole legs.
Also featured is a Nineteenth Century Russian Karelian birch wood veneer center table with a round top and parcel ebonized base along with a Nineteenth Century Russian Karelian birch wood veneer settee with a barrel back and an upholstered seat and two cushions. Both were purchased from Niall Smith in 2000.
Decorative arts highlights include a set of Zuber “Vues d’Amerique Du Nord” panoramic wallpaper panels, showing West Point, N.Y. They were designed by Jean-Julien Deltil after the original engraving by Milbert, first edited in 1834. Elements of the “Views of North America” wallpaper were used by Jacqueline Kennedy for use in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House. Next is a monumental framed piece of the wallpaper series Dufour after Merry-Joseph Blondel. It comprises a French Neoclassical Empire scene from the “Psyche” wallpaper series and is printed in grisaille. Next is a pair of Grand Tour bronze two-handled vases, after the antique model by Michele d’Amodio, each with two foliate-wrapped handles, the bodies are decorated with relief scenes of centaurs carrying putti among wooded landscapes with architectural capriccios, and the socle bases have acanthus and egg-and-dart motifs. The piece was removed from the Fifth Avenue residence of the MacArthur family. It is followed by an early Nineteenth Century Thiery A Paris Louis XVI gilt bronze mounted marble portico mantel clock with a white enamel dial with Arabic numerals to the chapter ring and two wind holes.
Jewelry and luxury goods will feature an Etruscan-style 22K yellow gold and ruby hammer finish hinged bangle bracelet, bezel-set with six graduated round cabochon-cut rubies. Next is a rare Bueche-Girod 18K yellow gold lady’s dress watch with an oval tessellated tiger eye dial and florentine textured bracelet, marked on dial.
