ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Michaan’s Auctions will host three auctions in March. The Classic sale featuring furniture and decorative arts from Europe and America kicks off on March 18 with monumental Meissen pieces and stained glass. The second round is the Dr and Mrs Carl Williams estate from Santa Barbara, which features jewelry, decorative arts, fine arts and rugs. The final round is the firm’s gallery auction on March 19 that is studded with diamonds, world renowned artists, rare Chinese ceramics and sterling silver and much more.
In the Classic sale, one of the top lots is a Meissen porcelain monumental ewer depicting earth ($7/10,000). There is also a showing of stained glass, and leading the pack is a massive Lamb Studios stained glass window depicting Moses with the Ten Commandments ($25/30,000). The glass section is rounded out with a Tiffany Studios Fleur-de-Lis shade ($3/4,000).
In the next round, Michaan’s features the Dr and Mrs Carl Williams estate. The proceeds from this estate go to benefit the Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif. Mrs Williams purchased her first demitasse set in Berlin in 1947 soon after World War II ended. Much of the collection has been professionally packed since purchase and stored in custom-made crates; many items have been out of circulation for more than 65 years. She had experts in ceramics and American brilliant cut glass locating these special pieces at auction houses and specialty stores throughout the world. A few examples include a rare set of ten Minton pate-sur-pate plates ($8/12,000), a Berbedienne onyx and ormolu three-piece clock garniture ($4/6,000) and a Meriden and Wilcox ABCG champagne pitcher ($1/1,500). Besides glass and ceramics, the collections also feature jewelry, paintings and rugs.
The final round is the gallery auction. As always, there is a bright sparkle in the jewelry cases. To start, there is a diamond, 14K white gold ring just over 1.5 carats, ($3/5,000). Another is a coral, diamond, platinum, 14K yellow gold ring ($600/800). Another jewelry highlight is a diamond, ruby, sapphire, 14K yellow gold articulated Jester pendant ($400/600).
Michaan’s fine art department has many finds queued up for collectors, including a Guy Carleton Wiggins (American, 1883-1962), ‘’Looking Down Fifth Avenue from the Plaza, New York’’ oil on board ($20/30,000); a Felipe Castañeda (Mexican, b 1933), figural sculpture ($3/5,000); and a Michael Kanin (American, 1910-1993), bronze sculpture of Charlie Chaplin with MoMA loan label attached under base ($1/2,000). Kanin was an American director, producer, playwright and screenwriter who shared an Academy Award with Ring Lardner Jr for writing the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy film comedy Woman of the Year (1942). Kanin returned to fine art in his later years creating bronze sculptures of many entertainers, including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx. This is the first work by Kanin to come up for public auction
Michaan’s Asian art department will offer a hanging scroll attributed to Wang Zeng (1867-1983), “Peonies and Rocks,” ink and color on paper, inscribed, signed and with one artist’s seal on lower right corner ($1/2,000) as well as a Chinese blue and white double gourd vase. Decorated with leafy branches forming the characters “Fu, Lu and Shou” (prosperity, status and longevity) bearing numerous peaches, the base has an apocryphal six-character Wanli mark in underglaze blue within a double circle ($1/1,500). A Chinese blue glaze incense burner with dragon handles comes from the personal collection of the late Chow Kwen Lim, former chief executive officer of the Chow Sang Sang Jewelry Company ($700/900).
Previews are Thursday, March 17, by appointment; Friday, March 18, 9 am to 5 pm; and Saturday, March 19: 9 am to end of auction.
