POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Having moved south to be closer to family members, Dr Doris Soldner has selected Hyde Park Country Auctions to sell her lifetime collection of antiques, mostly Americana and early primitives from around the world. The sale will occur in two parts with May 8 being her Americana collection, and late summer her toys and dolls, ephemera, early bottles and glass, advertising, sterling silver and more Americana and Victorian-era collectibles, including lighting.
Doris’ husband Jerry, who passed away in 2013, had a bachelor’s degree in economics from Fordham University and held executive positions for Fortune 500 companies all through his 40-plus-year career. Doris has a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Purchase and a PhD from Southern Methodist University in medical anthropology. She has volunteered and worked in various historical societies as a curator and programs director. She and Jerry started an antique home restoration consulting company 40 years ago. They owned many antique residences during their lifetime, including a Victorian house in New Jersey, a 1750 stone house in Kingston, N.Y., which is on the National Historic Register, a 1700 salt box in Pound Ridge, N.Y., a 1750 center hall colonial in Wilton, Conn., and an 1850 farmhouse in Glenford, N.Y., all of which they lovingly restored and filled with period furnishings.
In their 57 years of marriage the Soldners lived in eight different states and moved 13 times. They started their antiques collection a few years after they got married and traveled the antiques stores, auctions and flea markets from Illinois to the Mid-Atlantic, New England and the Southwest. They had varied interests: Doris tended towards textiles, American Indian, primitive and Southwestern art, primitive furniture and pottery. Jerry loved mechanical things like music boxes, apple peelers, antique tools and phonographs. Many of these items are featured in this sale, as well as primitive and formal period antique lighting, which they both loved. After Jerry passed, Doris had to significantly reduce their collection as she sold their Kingston house and moved to a smaller residence in Lake Carmel, N.Y. What she kept were her favorite and most treasured items and now that she has moved south to an assisted living community, she is hopeful that her collection will bring the same happiness to others as it did to her and Jerry.
“I have known Doris for many years, and have always been impressed with her knowledge and appreciation of antiques across all fields,” said Dom Navarra, owner and auctioneer of Hyde Park Country Auctions. “As you entered her home, antiques were present everywhere — not a scintilla of space was left on any wall and all cupboards, chests and work tables were filled with wonderful collectibles. Therefore, it is with mixed feelings that we are selling her lifetime collection as I know how much she enjoyed collecting and teaching others about the importance of preserving these precious objects for future generations. It didn’t have to be valuable for her to appreciate the items she collected, just simple, pleasing to the eye, with most being utilitarian objects that our ancestors used in raising their families. I hope that you will preview the sale, and bring home something special that you will enjoy during your lifetime as it did for Doris and Jerry — this is ‘Doris’s Wish.,”
Added to the sale is a partial Americana collection from Connecticut and several other Hudson Valley consignors to round out the sale. Expect 500 Soldner lots, plus 100 additional Americana lots. The Soldner lots will all be identified as such in the catalog.
This will be an online-only sale via LiveAuctioneers, but previews will be available during the week of the sale as well as the day of the sale. Absentee and phone bids are accepted.
The auction facility is at 900 Dutchess Turnpike. For more information, www.hpcountryauctions.com or 845-471-5660.
