BOSTON — Grogan & Company will conduct its rugs and carpets auction on June 12 at 11 am Eastern featuring an offering of more than 150 collectible rugs, primarily from three private collections.
The auction will begin with 356 rugs from the estate of the late art and antiques dealer Peter Tillou of Litchfield, Conn. Tillou assembled a tasteful collection of Nineteenth Century Caucasian rugs comprising colorful Akstafa ($5/7,000), Shirvan, Perpedil, Kuba ($4/6,000), Daghestan, Kazak and Serapi rugs.
A selection of Turkish prayer rugs, South Persian village examples and dramatically designed Caucasian rugs highlight the offerings of a Cambridge, Mass., collector. This collection was purchased many years ago from the late Lawrence Kearney.
The collection of nearly 60 rugs from Dr Douglas M. and Nelda K. Lay of Chapel Hill, N.C., encompasses rare Turkoman rugs, Turkish prayer rugs and a wide variety of vintage Caucasian rugs. Highlights from the Lay collection include three Mughal silk embroidered prayer textiles ($2/3,000 and $3/5,000).
Several rare collectors’ rugs consigned by various owners round out the auction. Offerings from this selection include a rare Eagle II Turkoman Chuval from the first half of the Nineteenth Century ($15/25,000) and a Marasalli prayer rug with an illustrious history, having been published in G. Griffin Lewis’ 1911 book, The Practical Handbook of Oriental Carpets ($20/30,000). Additionally, five Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century rugs from a Canadian collector are sure to elicit international bidding interest.
There will be no in-person attendance on sale day, and the sale will be live-streamed at www.groganco.com, with telephone bidding also available. The auction exhibition may be viewed by appointment at the firm’s Beacon Hill gallery, 20 Charles Street. from Monday, June 6 to Saturday, June 11. For more information, 617-720-2020.
