NEW YORK CITY — On June 19, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from estates of the New York City and metropolitan area, including a Russian Order of Saint Vladimir ice cup, a Steinway & Sons grand piano, a Robert Motherwell screenprint and Christian Liaigre furniture. Other highlights include a Corum coin watch, a MacKenzie-Childs “Rabbits” table, a monumental tabernacle and Gorham Art Nouveau silver inkwell. A wide array of silver, porcelain, glass, jewelry, paintings and more complete the sale.
Highlights begin with a vintage Corum 1896 US $20 22K coin encased in 18K yellow gold, quartz man’s watch with a genuine crocodile strap and original Corum gold-tone buckle. Next is a Steinway & Sons New York grand piano, model L, serial number 429905 from 1972 with an ebonized finish. A Russian imperial period porcelain covered ice cup from the Order of Saint Vladimir service by the Gardner Factory, Verbilki, 1783-1785, is marked with factory marks in blue underglaze to base; it is based on an earlier model for the Berlin service given to Catherine II of Russia by Frederick the Great in 1772.
Silver seekers will find a Gorham Art Nouveau silver inkwell with marks of the Gorham Mfg Co., Providence, R.I., to the underside. The piece was cast and chased after a Martelé design, circa 1903, model number B1713, with a single candle holder over a woman’s face with flowing hair (approximately 38.0 troy ounces). Next is an early Victorian sterling silver five-piece tea service, each piece with marks of Charles Reily & George Storer, London, 1839, with a Victoria head mark. Each piece has a lobed body, elaborately chased with floral motifs and cartouches in the early Rococo Revival style (approximately 91.597 troy ounces). It is followed by an American Fisher sterling silver tray of rectangular form with a gadrooned border and two handles (approximately 97 troy ounces).
Next is a monumental silverplated tabernacle, surmounted by a silverplated cross with a brass figure of Christ, above a cast and chased Golgotha surmounting a dome above the main portion of the tabernacle, with eight finials of wheat and grapes representing the body and blood of Christ; the tabernacle is decorated with the Chi Rho symbol and “Ego Veritas Sum” (I am the Truth), and the interior is lined with cream silk.
The section continues with a Victorian Charles Stuart Harris, London, sterling silver kettle on a stand. The teapot is adorned with repousse scrolling foliate motifs, a straw-wrapped handle and a hinged reticulated scrolling foliate base (approximately 55.4 troy ounces). Also of note is a pair of Austrian 800 silver three-arm candlestick holders on a baluster-form shaft with scrolling arms, surmounted by an eagle-form finial (approximately 40 troy ounces), as well as a Nineteenth Century European 900 silver toothpick holder of flowers and leaves sprouting from a double-handled urn atop a circular base upon three feet (approximately 16.6 troy ounces).
The sale continues with a collection of modern furniture beginning with a set of six Niels Otto Moller (Danish, 1920 — 1982) Midcentury Modern dining chairs in carved wood with upholstered seats. Next is a Christian Liaigre modern minimalist cerused oak circular table on four rectangular patinated metal-mounted oak legs. The table is followed by a set of four Christian Liagre modern minimalist cerused oak side chairs, with square open backs and seats upholstered in jasper green leather. Next is a Christian Liaigre modern contemporary minimalist lounge sofa with sand mohair upholstery. The collection continues with a MacKenzie-Childs modern glazed ceramic round table, hand painted with floral pattern, with a fluffle of five rabbits surrounding the base and a pair of Luigi Pellegrin (Italian, 1925-2001) for MIM Roma, 1970s Italian Midcentury Modern lounge chairs in fiberglass with cushioned seats.
Lighting highlights include a pair of 1990s Christian Liaigre “Pastora” table lamps in patinated bronze and a rare Jean Prouve (French, 1901-1984) “Potence” lamp (designed 1950) in black with a movable arm and wall plate. Also of note is a Muller Freres (Luneville, France) French Art Deco frosted glass chandelier with six arms.
Fine art includes a collection of paintings and sculpture spanning centuries. The highlight is a likely late Eighteenth or early Nineteenth Century painting of “The Suffering of the Virgin” by a provincial Mexican artist depicting the Virgin presented by angels with the attributes of the crucifixion. Also of note is Robert Motherwell’s 1961 screenprint “Capriccio,” signed and numbered 59 from an edition of 200. Next is a grouping of Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century portraiture highlighted by a Louis Innocent Goubaud (Italian/Belgian, 1780-1847) French Empire period oil on canvas painting portrait of a nobleman astronomer of the Napoleonic era. The sale also includes works by Alfred Perkins, Emil Lindenfeld, Louis Mendez and others.
