BEDFORD, N.Y. — Rare and important fine and decorative arts are underpinned by nearly 200 lots of estate jewelry at Butterscotch’s 2022 summer estates auction conducted at Historic Hall on July 17 beginning at 10:30 am Eastern, with live, online and phone bidding.
Nearly one quarter of the sale is representing items from the estate of Joan E. Black, a noted collector of jewelry, Quimper and other objets d’art. Together with her husband, the late Crawford Black, Joan spent a lifetime acquiring unique works and curiosities from notable galleries and auction houses. In addition to art, the Black family also developed a taste for philanthropy, donating several works in their lifetimes — including a Lee Krasner and Alexander Calder to the Vero Beach Museum of Art
Notable consignments from the Joan E. Black estate include an Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) pen, ink and mixed media drawing, “Legend & Reality,” a colorful abstraction by Donald Hamilton Fraser (1929-2009) and a watercolor from seascape master John Whorf (1903-1959) depicting a lively scene of men aboard a fishing vessel Sea Fox. The Black collection is well rounded by several important pieces of David Webb jewelry, a fancy yellow diamond and Black’s specialty — an extensive showing of important early Quimper.
Items from many other New York and Connecticut estates will be crossing the block. The offerings of fine art are well rounded and include a landscape painting by American artist Ernest Lawson (1873-1939) from a Park Avenue, NYC, estate, as well as three works by Jon Von Wicht (1888-1970) and a bronze by Nag Arnoldi (b 1928). From the estate of a Scarsdale, N.Y., centenarian lady comes a hitherto undiscovered oil on panel by Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), along with paintings by Marcel Dyf (1899-1985) and Louis-Emile Adan (1839-1937), among others.
A highlight of the auction is a Tiffany Studios stained glass table lamp, having a Dragonfly shade (diameter 14 inches) colorful glass “jewel” beads on a bronze mushroom-form base. Other decorative selections in the sale include a set of 12 cameo pate-sur-pate plates by Albion Birks for Tiffany & Co / Mintons China and a Michael Kane Nantucket basket. Gallery owner Paul D. Marinucci said it’s “probably the nicest Nantucket basket [he’s] ever seen.”
The auction also boasts a wide array of Asian arts, particularly Chinese porcelain as well as a melon-shaped celadon jade brush washer that is also garnering attention. A number of George II silver pieces from the Black estate will cross the block, as well as an 84-piece Buccellati flatware service in the Impero [Empire] pattern. The auction’s jewelry selection is headlined by an iconic Cartier coral and diamond ladybug pin, and also features an extensive collection of wristwatches, including Rolex, Omega and more, as well as designer gold and diamond jewelry.
This auction features nearly 700 lots. Previews on Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16, from 11 am to 5 pm.
