MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — The Benefit Shop Foundation appeals to many buyers by selling across the board, and its monthly Red Carpet auctions typically feature a variety of fine art, decorative arts, Midcentury Modern furniture and much more. The auction house has of late been adding new focused sales to its offerings. On the heels of a specialty jewelry auction in June that achieved robust results, it will present its inaugural luxury fashion auction on Wednesday, July 6, at 10 am.
“Buyers were so enthusiastic over our first two jewelry sales [the first one was in December] that we decided to go glam again and be fashion-forward with our Designer Fashion Luxury Brands Specialty Sale,” said Pam Stone, founder of the Benefit Stop Foundation. “We’ve cherrypicked some very fashionable closets around the world to host an auction of luxury and couture fashions.”
The nearly 800-lot auction features quite a few pieces that are new with tags (never worn) and designer names represented include a who’s who of famous European designers, including Chanel, Gucci, Missoni and Suarez to top American brands like St John and Judith Leiber.
Fashion can be trendy, such as high low dresses, clogs and metallic tops, to timeless, such as the classic little black dress. While furniture and fine art can occupy finite spaces in the home, there’s usually room for just one more dress or one more handbag. And well-made clothes will not only look good but will stand up over time versus fast-fashion items that don’t last and end up in landfills.
Handbags in a variety of styles, sizes and strap lengths will be well represented in this auction, led by a Chanel New Line beige wallet cross body bag having a silver tone chain ($500-$1,500). Buyers who like a particular style — or a certain brand — often buy multiples in different colors. Crossing the block is a pair of Barry Kieselstein bags: a cord woven leather, drawstring bucket bag in black ($300-$1,000) with gold tone hardware and two rolled handles and a cord leather baguette shoulder bag ($200/800), also black, having silver tone hardware and a green nubuck suede-lined interior.
Made by Suarez come two fashion-forward bags: the first is a red and black snakeskin leather shoulder bag/clutch ($200/800) followed by a tan crocodile leather shoulder bag ($200/800) in a fold over style bag with snap closure. Both Suarez bags have a removable shoulder strap so they can be styled as a clutch and the strap worn as a belt.
Bags represented here mostly come from Europe and as far as South Africa, such as the Cape Cobra color block python shoulder bag ($200-$1,000) with an embossed black and wine red python leather outer body and a slate gray suede lined interior. The Gucci name is sure to attract much attention and a Gucci GG black leather tote bag ($300/800) has two rolled leather top handles and a spacious interior.
Besides handbags and fashion accessories, a wide variety of clothing will cross the block, most notably French fashion. Highlights include a Chanel cashmere and silk jacket ($500-$2,000), possibly never worn, ladies size 42, and a never worn Chloe Luxury mohair and wool knit cardigan ($300/800), having directional color stripes in colors of blue-grays, orange-browns, pink and a black and rose color.
The couture choices continue with a Lafayette 148 New York gradient leather jacket ($500-$1,000), ladies size small, having double breast pockets and new with tags; a Chanel Camellia laser-cut black jacket ($200/800), possibly never worn; an unlabeled couture black mink cape ($100-$1,000), possibly never worn, about 62 inches wide, and a St John multi-tone sequined blouse in beige, almond and black ($400/600), new with tags.
Missoni is an Italian luxury fashion knitwear brand known for its psychedelic patterns and multi-colored zigzag designs. Bold colors and patterns from stripes to zigzags are featured on many of the 26 Missoni lots in this auction. A merino wool blend cardigan ($300/700) has a loose zigzag design in oranges, whites, saffrons and blacks, while a colorful matching camisole and button-up set ($100/300) has stripes in reds, oranges, yellows and purples.
Rounding out the auction will be a pair of lady’s Cartier sunglasses, Paris ($200/500), a Mary McFadden couture evening dressy jacket, quilted and beaded ($200/500), having a shawl collar trimmed with beads and golden piping and a drop-neck Armani Collezioni sleeveless top ($150/300), Italy, size 6, in a shimmering gold toned color.
