SEARSPORT, MAINE — DownEast Auctions has been commissioned to sell the coin and currency collection of the late Frank Nabrotzky of Waldo County, Maine. The extensive collection will be sold in several auctions, with the first one scheduled for July 30 at noon.
One of the more interesting items is a so-called “Box Dollar.” This example was made from a 1878-S trade dollar. A skilled machinist took two silver dollars and removed the centers and concealed a double hinge. When closed it looks like a regular coin. When a special spot on the coin is pressed, the coin opens with a small photo inside. This coin has 1889 and a name engraved inside.
The auction also has a selection of local currency, including national bank notes from Bangor, Searsport, Belfast, Rockland, Lewiston and Portland. These notes were issued by the local national banks, printed by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing and backed by federal bonds. Few survive today, as most were redeemed and returned to the US Treasury Department.
The auction also has Maine obsolete bank notes that were printed by the local banks. The collection has bank notes from Belfast, Frankfort, Searsport and Sanford, Maine.
DownEast Auctions is at 328 East Main Street. For more information, 207-548-2393 or www.downeastauctions.com.
