NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace will present a summer estate auction, July 24. The auction brings together 280 lots of fine art, decorative arts, furnishings, fine jewelry and luxury goods.
Highlights open with a large oil on canvas of a blue vase on a table by French painter Jules Cavailles who was a member of the 1935 French art group Peintres de la réalité poétique. Also showcased is a Roman mosaic panel, likely late imperial period, circa Fourth to Fifth Century CE, with squares, diamonds and hexagons composed of orange, red, white and gray tone stone tesserae from a private collection in the Pierre Hotel.
Fine art highlights include a collection of works by American painter Vaclav Vytlacil. The first offering is “Still Life with Apples,” an oil on canvas painting depicting a Cubist abstract expressionist still life with fruit and a pitcher. The piece won the William H.R. French Memorial Gold Medal at the 47th Annual Show at the Chicago Art Institute in 1936. Next is a gouache on paper by Vytlacil depicting an abstract expressionist still life with fruit, including grapes and pears. It is followed by a graphite drawing on paper by Vytlacil depicting a village atop a hill landscape scene and a lithograph with watercolor painting by Vytlacil depicting a city landscape of Munich with houses, railroads and mountains in the distance.
Also featured is an oil on canvas by Ukrainian artist Nathan Isaevich Altman depicting a village landscape with houses beside a country lane and a whimsical painting of three ladies in coordinated attire by the Columbian painter Leandro Velasco. Next is a 1970s modern abstract wall sculpture with three chromed metal elements mounted to a heavy Lucite plaque by American artist Harold Sclar. It is followed by a gouache on paper titled “Poltergeist #2” by American artist Martha Visser’t Hooft. The piece depicts five red and black figures in a shaded field and has provenance from Contemporary Arts Gallery, New York and Frank Bowers, Los Angeles.
Highlights also include works by Spanish painter Josep Coll Bardolet and Ukrainian painter Lina Pavil. The sale also includes English and French school portraiture along with works by Louis Mendez, Julius Hatofsky and Medeleine Luka.
Furnishings on offer include a North German Neoclassical bookmatched mahogany-veneered temple-form desk-bureau, possibly Berlin, circa 1835, with a brass-inlaid pedimented temple containing a locking cabinet, flanked by galleries concealing two cabinets and two hidden spring-lock drawers, above a flame mahogany roll-front desk concealing a trompe l’oeil ebony and pearwood marquetry interior desk with hidden drawers and writing slide, above three long drawers on block feet. Next is a set of four 1980s Thonet Vienna chairs upholstered in a Josef Hoffman-designed geometric fabric. The chairs are followed by a late George III mahogany secretary chest, Nineteenth Century, in rectangular form with a brass gallery to top and an Italian olivewood-veneered book-form semainier worktable.
Highlights conclude with an Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern lounge chair and ottoman with black leather upholstery, marked “Designed by Charles Eames / Herman Miller Zeeland Mich.”
As for jewelry, the sale features a signed 18K yellow gold Modernist sculptural pendant by sculptor and architect Harry Abend, a Sydney Lynch Modernist silver gold and pearl brooch and a bracelet, and a Lilly Barrack sterling silver and 14K yellow gold open modern ring topped with triangular gold elements.
