NEW YORK CITY — On September 25, Auctions at Showplace presents 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from estates of the New York City and metropolitan area, including pieces by Louis Neillot, Victor Salmones and Hunt Slonem. Other highlights include a Chinese Ming dynasty carving, an Art Deco platinum and diamond ring, a selection of Grand Tour bronzes, as well as furniture by Karl Springer and Paul Evans. A wide array of fine silver, porcelain, glass, jewelry, paintings, and more complete the sale.
Highlights open with a stunning Art Deco period hand fabricated engraved and chased platinum ring featuring a prong set transitional cut round brilliant diamond, with GIA paperwork. Next is an antique, early Twentieth Century, Persian Kashan silk pictorial rug depicting a flowering vase next to a tree with birds and deer. It is followed by an exceptional recamier or Grecian-style sofa attributed to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, New York City, circa 1805, with brass-nailed black horsehair upholstery and a mahogany reeded frame and scrolling reeded arms. The pieces are accentuated splayed “cornucopia” legs on parcel-gilt hairy paw feet with brass casters. The offered lot bears comparison to a recamier with similar carving in the collection of George and Linda Kauffman, illustrated in Michael Flanagan’s, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection, fig. 58.
Fine art includes a collection of paintings and sculpture spanning centuries. The highlight is a large British Pre-Raphaelite School, oil on canvas, circa 1890, depicting a young girl with unbound black hair in a studio setting, wearing a Venetian silk brocade robe and engaging the viewer with her gaze, the canvas stamped on reverse: “54 rue Notre Dame des Champs, Paris / Paul Foinet / ‘Van Eyck’ / Toiles & Couleurs Extra-fines,” where the merchant worked between 1885 and 1904. Sculpture highlights include Hunt Slonem’s resin and acrylic on wood sculpture “Toucans” and Mexican sculptor Victor Salmones’ large patinated bronze titled “The Search.”
The sale features an exceptional oil on canvas depicting the Immaculate Conception of Mary, after the work by Spanish Baroque painter, Bartolome Esteban Murillo (Spanish, 1617-1682) with a sticker to verso from the Holy Name of Mary Parish in Montgomery, N.Y., signed by Father Patrick Brady (third pastor of the church from 1874 to 1894) and dated 1879.
Modern furniture on offer includes a James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern pair of ebonized and upholstered open armchairs in the Chinese modern taste and a Paul Evans Brutalist Modern “Patchwork” coffee table with a steel, copper and bronze patchwork base and with square slate top. Next are a pair of James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern peach lacquered bedside dresser tables and a Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin Modern cinnabar lacquered credenza.
Antiques on offer include a Baltic neoclassical brass-mounted mahogany three-drawer commode, circa 1800, and a Swedish Late Gustavian / Empire gilt and ebonized mahogany table in the manner of Jonas Frisk (Swedish,1787-1849). Also of note is an Anglo-Indian Sankheda polychrome and parcel-gilded sofa and pair of armchairs. The pieces in this suite resemble in form several painted pieces by Lockwood de Forest provided for his own home on 10th Street in New York City.
An exciting collection of carpets, including an Art Deco period Oushak hand-knotted wool blend rug with vegetal and floral tree pattern and a Persian Tabriz wool and silk prayer rug depicting a flowering vase and hanging mosque lamp flanked by birds and columns will also be offered.
Objects of note include a Baroque carved and polychromed standing Santos figure of the Virgin Mary, in elaborate gilt vestment, wearing a later metal and glass cabochon crown and a pair of Italian Grand Tour obelisks.
Entertainers will delight at a Gorham sterling silver 130-piece part dinner service in the Etruscan pattern (169 ozt inclusive) and a Christofle silverplate dinner service for 12 in the Albi pattern.
Asian highlights include a diverse selection of Chinese antiques, including a Chinese Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 CE) Qingbai early ware ceramic porcelain pottery vase with a lobed body on a scalloped foot with provenance from Christie’s. Also of note is a Chinese yellow cloisonne lidded box decorated with the imagery of foo dogs, fish and chrysanthemums.
An eclectic collection of fine jewelry, costume jewelry and luxury goods will also be offered. Of note is a collection of fine watches, including a Panerai Luminor Marina 8 Days watch, an Omega Seamaster Professional Diver watch, a Breitling Chronomat chronograph watch and a Rolex lady’s Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch.
