Kaminski Auctions’ Waldingfield Auction ONSITE

IPSWICH, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions will present its October estate auction on October 8-9 onsite at the Waldingfield estate. The estate was built in 1929 by Julia Appleton and her husband Charles Sumner Bird II and sits atop 40 acres overlooking the Ipswich River with formal gardens, a French tree allée and horse trails. In 1984, Waldingfield was purchased by Arthur J. Finklestein, a notable conservative strategist who masterminded the political campaigns of numerous presidents, senators and governors. He and his partner, Donald Curiale, lovingly restored the home to its present elegance. A selection of English and European furniture and decorative arts, many original to the chateau will be on offer in the auction, as well as additions from other estates.
Day One of the auction features the contents of a late prominent socialite’s estates in Philadelphia and Palm Beach, Fla. In addition will be the contents of an apartment in the Sherry Netherland on Fifth Avenue, New York City, decorated by the designer Geoffrey Bradfield of Bradfield & Tobin Design, New York City. His work has been described as “refined luxurious, exquisitely curated, fearless, bespoke and completely of the moment.” The company under the Bradfield name has many impressive clients and has been named among the world’s top designers by Architectural Digest.
There is also the estate of the late Raymond Han, a prominent New York painter who passed away in 2017. He studied with Wilson Young Stamper at the Honolulu Museum of Art, and later with the Arts Student League of New York. He is best known for his still life and photorealism paintings.
Original to the Waldingfield chateau and presented in the auction are several oil paintings and bronzes. Other paintings on offer include a Francis P. Martin work, titled “Picnic,” in a carved giltwood frame, and a Marie-Francois Firmin-Girard (French, 1838-1921) work depicting a day at the beach, oil on canvas, signed in a hand-carved giltwood fluted cove frame. A Thomas Levigne “Feeding the Swans” and a Frederick Cayley Robinson “Girls in a Boat” are two other notable paintings on offer.
Other lots include a Fernand Leger (French 1881-1955) watercolor titled “Nature Morte” and labeled M. Knoedler & Co. Inc., 1948, a Milton Avery “Trees” monotype/gouache on paper, signed and dated 1957, and a Frederic Remington saloon scene titled “Gold Locks and a Bronco.” It is a gouache illustration for Cassells magazine, a British publication.
Artwork continues with several paintings by Raymond Han, including “Le Cochon Fidele,” an oil on canvas, dated 1994 with a LC204 Forum Gallery, NY label, among others.
Furniture on offer includes a pair of Nineteenth Century Renaissance rococo sideboards having carved giltwood mirrors with putti and lion heads, shells and carved fruit throughout, a late Eighteenth/early Nineteenth Century George III mahogany breakfront bookcase, a set of late Eighteenth/early Nineteenth Century fancy Irish Chippendale mahogany dining chairs and a diverse collection of Biedermeier furniture, including a pair of early Nineteenth Century Biedermeier walnut, ebonized and parcel-gilt commodes. A pair of Nineteenth Century Russian neoclassical Karelian birch bergères are sure to garner a lot of attention. They are from the Sherry Netherland designer apartment.
There are three bedroom suites/beds on offer, the first a Nineteenth Century rococo six-piece bedroom suite, having carved putti, mermaids, winged figures, urns and wheat sheaves in walnut with grey marble. This suite is presented in its entirety, six pieces and shipping can be arranged. There is also a Leta Foster designed hand-painted canopy bed having carved posts and lattice work crown, from a Palm Beach, Fla., estate, as well as a Seventeenth/Eighteenth Century English carved canopy oak bed, whose ownership is attributed to Francis I, from Chateau de Joinville, up to 1804.
Decorative arts include a rare set of seven hand-painted large-scale plaques depicting “The Seven Ages of Man” by Henry Stacy Marks (1829-1898), circa 1874, based on scenes from Shakespeare’s As You Like It by the Minton Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, U.K. There is an early Twentieth Century Aesthetic Movement stained and leaded glass four-panel screen mounted in an ebonized frame with illuminating elements. A selection of Chinese items features in the sale, including two cloisonne censers, a pair of painted and carved foo dogs and a Chinese bronze Buddha.
A Steinway & Sons Model S grand piano, New York/Hamburg, serial #524163, with upholstered piano bench and a Linke signed curio/music cabinet with fine ormoulu mounts purchased from the MGM auction Los Angeles are also standout lots in this auction.
Day two features a selection of sofas, marble top bureaus and consoles, chandeliers and wall sconces and mirrors from a New York City landmark hotel.
The Waldingfield estate is at 55 Waldingfield Road, Ipswich, Mass.
