NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace will present its fall fine art and design sale on October 9. The sale will feature 145 lots of fine art mixed with modern design from New York Metropolitan area estates and private collections.
The sale features a collection of fine art, including works by Reuven Rubin, Andy Warhol, Gustaf Fjaestad and Pablo Picasso; furnishings by Gio Ponti, Donald Deskey, John Dickinson and Pedro Friedeberg; Tiffany art glass; and watches from Rolex and Vacheron Constantin.
Painting highlights open with a 1966 oil on canvas titled “In Galilee” by Reuven Rubin. The painting depicts figures at work within an impressionistic landscape, with the ancient city of Galilee and the Lake of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) in the distance. The offered lot was one of several studies prepared for what some consider his masterwork “The Great Galilee ‘’ executed for the Israeli Knesset in 1966. The offered lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity from the painter’s daughter-in-law, Carmela Rubin of the Rubin Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel; the work is in the museum’s registry and is to be included in the upcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work.
Next is a large Swedish impressionist landscape executed in 1896 depicting yellow birches in Varmland contrasting with a blue lake and sky by Gustaf Fjaestad. Fjaestad was a Swedish painter known for his evocative landscapes of the areas around Varmland near Karlstadt. Also featured is an oil on board portrait of a peasant woman with a headscarf by Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu, one of the founders of modern Romanian painting alongside Ion Andreescu and Stefan Luchian. Also of note is an abstract hibernal landscape oil on canvas by Raimonds Staprans (Latvian-American, b 1928) titled “Winter Fields” with provenance from “Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco.” The sale also includes works by Moshe Elazar Castel and Harold Klunder.
Prints and multiples are highlighted by a collection of works by Andy Warhol. Up first is Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup I, Tomato F&S II.46,” a 1968 screen print in colors on wove paper printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co. and published by Factory Additions, New York. The print depicts the iconic pop art image of the 1960s, the Campbell’s Tomato Soup can and is signed, numbered with the edition mark on verso. Next are four lots of hand-colored 1970s floral screen prints by Andy Warhol. Each piece from the edition of 250 is hand colored with Dr Martin’s analine watercolor dyes, printed on Arches paper and printed by Alexander Heinrici, New York.
Next is an artist’s proof of Pablo Picasso’s aquatint and gouache, “Le Petit Pierrot aux Fleurs,” of Picasso’s son Paulo dressed as a pierrot (a male character of French pantomime). Also of note is a grouping of prints by Marc Chagall. The sale includes the 1967 color lithograph “Couple de Paysans” from an edition of 50, the 1984 lithograph “The Three Nudes’’ numbered 18 from an edition of 50 with Jane Kahan gallery label on verso, and the 1984 lithograph “The Artist with a Goat’’ numbered 10 from an edition of 50. Also of note is a 1940s monotype by Harry Bertoia with Kennedy Galleries purchase paperwork, Robert Rauschenber’s color lithograph “Night Tork’’ from the “Rookery Mounds’’ series, which includes photographs taken by the artist in and around Fort Myers, Fla., in 1979, and a hand-hooked abstract wool tapestry by Alan Davie.
Sculpture is highlighted by five bronzes by Victor Salmones, including “Magic,” a life-size modern bronze sculpture depicting a magician levitating his female assistant through a hoop. Also featured is a surrealist bronze depicting a one-winged standing Nike by Paul Wunderlich.

The piece was designed by Deskey and manufactured by Schmieg, Hungate & Kotzian, Inc., New York City with registration numbers and manufacturers’ marks underneath the body of drawers.
A collection of pieces by Mexican designer Pedro Friedeberg is highlighted by a 1970s postmodern surrealist Hand-Foot center table in carved giltwood with a round glass top and a Hand-Foot stool carved with silvered wood from 1995. Continuing the themes of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, the sale includes a late Twentieth Century modern minimalist leg wall console by John Dickenson.
