EAST MORICHES, N.Y. — South Bay Auctions announced that a recently uncovered Robert Motherwell painting will be featured in its next sale on Saturday, October 22, along with offerings across all categories by some of the most sought-after artists and designers of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.
The Motherwell painting titled “The Spanish Night,” 1959, was created the year after the artist’s honeymoon in Spain and France with fellow Abstract Expressionist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011). The small 6-by-8-inch oil on canvasboard connects to some of the artist’s best-known series relating to Spain that he began creating in this period. The work, which came from a Manhattan Upper East Side estate, has been out of the public eye since 1961, when it was donated by Motherwell (at the request of Marcel Duchamp) to a benefit auction for the American Chess Foundation conducted at Parke-Bernet Galleries (now Sotheby’s). The provenance has been researched by the Dedalus Foundation, and the work has been added to its online catalogue raisonné of supplementary works by Motherwell, under catalog number SP10. The painting is estimated at $15/20,000.
A large canvas by James Edward Buttersworth leads this sale that is also brimming with works by important Nineteenth Century American artists. The painting features a dynamic regatta scene in choppy seas ($20/30,000). Other highlights in this category include a rare Frank Weston Benson East Gloucester landscape ($4/6,000), a Mauritz Frederick de Haas marine painting ($4/6,000), a large scene by Andrew Melrose ($2/4,000), a pair of William Sydney Mount oil portraits ($3/5,000) and a William Trost Richards watercolor ($1,2/1,800).
Several iconic Twentieth Century American prints are also among the key lots in the sale, including an impression of Stow Wengenroth’s “High Arches, Brooklyn Bridge” lithograph ($8/12,000) and a vibrant example of Gustave Baumann’s “Redwood, Muir Woods” woodcut ($5/7,000).
Furniture highlights include three Herter Brothers Aesthetic Movement pieces: an ebonized parlor cabinet with flower inlay panels ($1,5/2,500), as well as two ebonized oak credenzas (each $2/3,000). On offer in the decorative category are a rare complete pair of Tiffany Studios bronze and blown-out glass candlesticks with Favrile glass shades ($3/5,000) and a large, enameled panel by Edward Winter depicting a reclining female nude ($2/3,000). A rare Dodge glass eye yellowlegs decoy is also worthy of note ($1,8/2,200).
Preview is Sunday, October 16-Friday, October 21, 11 am to 4 pm, and by appointment.
