CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — CRN Auctions will conduct its annual fall auction on Sunday, November 6, commencing at 11 am Eastern time.
This extremely eclectic sale is so varied, it is pointless to list all the categories, said auction coordinator Karin Phillips.
Highlights are the American antiques belonging to G.W. “Bill” Samaha that are being sold. This smaller group is from Samaha’s Ohio collection, where he has retired at age 92. CRN sold Samaha’s Massachusetts collection from his Wellesley home in June.
Most remarkable being offered is a collection of 15 watercolor portraits of the descendants of freed slave Nelson Ray (born into slavery in 1820-d 1882) done by his daughter, Sarah. The group is being offered as one lot. In addition is a 33-inch-tall cloth family doll. The story of Ray’s journey after he was freed by his owner is as inspirational as it is devastating. It is a rare example of a known slave history with a happy ending.
Collections and items gathered from several New England homes and estates express the variety of people’s “objects of desire” comprising English and Continental; Eighteenth through Twentieth Century works of art; silver; Arts and Crafts; carpets; ecclesiastical items; Chinese Export porcelains; a collection of nautical items, including Nineteenth Century scrimshaw whales teeth.
CRN Auctions is at 57 Bay State Road. For information, www.crnauctions.com or 617-661-9582.
