NEW YORK CITY — On October 23, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from New York City metropolitan area estates.
Highlights open with a pair of Franz Hagenauer Art Deco silver-tone chromed brass metal masks, one stylized female face struck with “Hagenaeur Wien / Made In Austria” and “WHW” maker’s mark to reverse, the other a stylized male face signed “Franz” with the same marks to reverse. Next is a Rene Lalique “Courlis” vase (designed 1931), model number 1085, in emerald glass with white patina in recesses, the underside signed with etched “R Lalique / France.” It is followed by a 14K yellow gold solitaire diamond ring featuring a round brilliant cut diamond, weighing 1.70 carats, accompanied by a GIA diamond grading report. Also featured is an English George III sterling silver large bread basket hallmarked London 1781 by John Wakelin & William Taylor. The circular basket has openwork sides formed as reeded lattice, with a rope band upper rim and a rope twist swing handle,
Featured objects in the decorative arts category include a pair of antique monumental Grand Tour Jaune de Sienne marble covered urn vases with turned bodies and lids, upon octagonal bases. Also of note is a French Nineteenth Century Grand Tour large heavy cast metal sculpture of the “Borghese Gladiator,” depicting a swordsman during a fight. The piece is a cast version of the famed marble original at the Louvre museum in Paris, created by Agasios around 100 BCE. Next is a pair of Grand Tour patinated bronze Albani urn vases, after the antique, cast with bacchanalian masques and two twisted vine form handles, mounted on marble bases followed by a Grand Tour large French bronze reduction or scale model of a high Gothic church or cathedral transept spire pinnacle. Next is a pair of antique European baroque carved, polychromed and parcel gilt angel figures with spread wings, likely altar elements used in ecclesiastic decor. Also of note is a French Empire large Neoclassical ormolu bronze and marble candlestick with acanthus form stem, surmounting three ram heads above a column with friezes of cherubs upon three sphinx form details, mounted on a green marble base.
Showplace will present an eclectic collection of furnishings ranging from traditional to modern. Featured items include a pair of antique Italian baroque tall carved painted and giltwood girandole-type standing mirrors on wooden bases with metal structural elements to back, foliate carved motif with acanthus leaves, originally likely girandoles or reliquaries used in ecclesiastical context. Next is a Stephane Bourdin for Maison Jansen French Neoclassical revival heavy glass top cocktail or coffee table with four Louis XV manner gilt-bronze acanthus leaf cabriole legs, circa 1960. It is followed by an Art Deco banded walnut and walnut burlwood-veneered cabinet credenza of stepped rounded rectangular form. The piece includes inlaid marquetry and is elaborately patterned in contrasting veneered walnut in stripes and fan shapes. Next is a pair of 1980s Karl Springer chrome demilune pedestals likely originally conceived as a table base. A set of four Richard Schultz for Knoll Studio “Topiary” indoor / outdoor arm chairs (designed 1993) in the form of a densely cropped hedge and a pair of Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Midcentury Modern pair of “Swan” swivel lounge chairs or armchairs in red upholstery are available for bidding.
Lighting of note includes a pair of modern clear quartz rock crystal table lamps with the mineral specimens cut into faceted geometric shapes and spaced by gilt wood fittings; a Lalique-attributed French Art Deco frosted art glass pendant chandelier with seven floral motif roundels interspersed with foliate decoration and gilt metal chains and stem with ornate rams heads and a Verrerie des Hanots French Art Deco gilt-bronze five-light flush mount, circa 1930, with frosted glass sphere shades around the frame and motifs of clouds and flowers. Also of note is a pair of French Art Deco pair of table lamps with nickel plated bases with abstract geometric motif and molded satin glass shades.
Entertainers will find a Maison Boin-Taburet, Paris French Regence-style vermeil 950 silver tea and coffee service, circa 1900, and a Gorham sterling silver part dinner service in the Melrose pattern.
The sale features a collection of Art Deco and Edwardian jewelry along with a 14K yellow gold pendant decorated with a Bacchus-inspired mask design by the surrealist artist Eric deKolb and a Tiffany & Co. bar pin/brooch made of 18K yellow gold featuring 15 channel-set round brilliant cut diamonds. Watches on offer include a vintage Omega Speedmaster Professional Mark II, a vintage Omega Constellation wristwatch and a vintage Hamilton wristwatch with a case and bracelet made of 14K white gold and featuring a diamond set dial with 20 bead and bezel set single cut diamonds.
Next are a Louis Vuitton covered leather hard-sided trunk suitcase with central red and green stripe detail and a vintage Louis Vuitton hard sided hatbox or train case in signature gold-tone “LV” monogram on brown leather. The sale also incudes a collection of Montblanc pens.
