MOUNT CRAWFORD, VA. — Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will conduct its 43rd semi-annual Premier Americana auction November 17-19. The three-day event features consignments from several important collections as well as a large selection of choice objects from various individuals, estates and institutions. Overall, with nearly 1,500 lots to be sold over the weekend, the sale is sure to generate plenty of excitement within the collecting community.
Day One, beginning at 9 am Eastern time on Thursday, November 17, will feature the collection of Donald Putterman, San Francisco, Calif.; material deaccessioned from the Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vt.; and property from the estate of Peter Tillou, Litchfield, Conn. The day’s offerings will include Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century glass and lighting of all types, with large selections of free-blown, pressed and blown-molded articles, many in rare colors or forms, as well as American historical/pictorial flasks and bottles. Highlights include a Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. pair of pressed open-work baskets on pedestals in brilliant deep amethyst; a blown-molded and pressed candlestick in medium blue, probably Boston & Sandwich; and a South Jersey free-blown candy stripe trumpet vase.
Day Two, beginning at 9 am on Friday, November 18, will feature the fourth and final session of the American historical transferware collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, Ariz.; property from the Ann and Clay Ring family collection, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, W.Va.; as well as material deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Va., and Old Salem Museum & Gardens, Winston Salem, N.C. The day’s offerings will include a broad selection of American Historical Staffordshire transferware, Nineteenth Century American folk pottery, country accessories, baskets, samplers, quilts and additional English and Chinese ceramics. Highlights for Day Two include a rare mid-Nineteenth Century Daniel Seagle (Lincoln, Co., N.C.) 15-gallon four-handled stoneware storage jar; a Staffordshire American Historical transfer-printed platter bearing the Arms of Delaware; a rare Bennington flint-enamel Rockingham-glaze figural Swiss lady change cover; and a bold, oversized 16-gallon West Virginia merchant’s stoneware jar with extensive cobalt decoration.
Day Three, beginning at 9 am on Saturday, November 19, will feature the Ann and Clay Ring family collection, Winston-Salem, N.C.; property from the collection of Kathy and Dr Joseph Arvay, Mendham, N.J.; selections from the important Americana collection of Barbara and the late Charlie Hunter, Staunton, Va.; as well as material deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, and Old Salem Museum & Gardens, Winston Salem, N.C. The day’s offerings will include a selection of rare Virginia and other Southern material; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century formal and country furniture, including painted examples; American folk and fine art; historical and Civil War material, including firearms and edge weapons; Nineteenth Century coin silver; rare antiquarian books; early American flags; and a selection of Oriental rugs and carpets. Highlights for the day include a Civil War-period 34-star Kansas-statehood American national flag; a New England Queen Anne tiger maple and birch tray-top tea table retaining original red-painted surface; a newly discovered true first edition of The Book Of Mormon, published 1830 in Palmyra, N.Y.; a Puffy Sleeve Artist folk art hollow-cut silhouette of a lady with parasol and bird; a rare American folk art carved and painted Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco/cigar store trade figure with Kentucky history; and a rare Jackson/Pierce US presidential White House service engraved glass wine cooler/rinser, recently discovered in a Virginia thrift store.
