NEW YORK CITY — On December 4, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from New York City Metropolitan Area estates and collections, including art by Alexander Altman, Christo, Robert Mangold, George Morrison, Vaclav Vytlacil and Andy Warhol. Other highlights include a 3.19-carat platinum diamond ring, Italian pietra dura plaques and furniture by Le Corbusier, Savino De Muro, Michel Pigneres and Maison Jansen. A wide array of fine silver, porcelain, glass, jewelry, lighting, paintings, and more complete the sale.
Fine paintings open with a 1950s abstract oil on Masonite by American painter George Morrison (American, 1919-2000). Next is a 1963 modern abstract composition on board by Mexican painter Leonardo Nierman titled “White Castle” followed by an untitled 1963 abstract on board also by Nierman.
Prints and multiples include a complete portfolio of nine works by Robert Mangold numbered 121 from the edition of 300 printed by Domberger K.G., Filderstadt, Germany and co-published by Edition Domberger, Stuttgart & Parasol Press 1977. Next is a lithograph titled “Corridor Store Front Project” by Christo that depicts an architectural blueprint in two pieces, signed and numbered “46/75” in the upper right. Andy Warhol’s serigraph on felt in blue features Golda Meir, the fourth and first female Prime Minister of Israel. The piece is ink signed to right and has a label reading “Golda Meir by Andy Warhol / Collection: Israel Museum Jerusalem / American Friends of the Israel Museum” and numbered “96/550” to reverse.
Furnishings open with a 1970s French Midcentury Modern brass, chrome and purple lacquer secretaire by Michel Pigneres and an American Aesthetic Movement fireplace surround from the Hotel Chelsea in New York City, designed by the architectural practice of Hubert, Pirrson & Company. Next are a pair of George Smith Etruscan red baize upholstered armchairs, with square backs and scrolling arms followed by a pair of Geoffrey D. Harcourt for Artifort swivel lounge chairs in tufted beige upholstery, raised on a brown metal base.
Decorative arts open with a collection of Baccarat. First are two Baccarat Diamant crystal baluster vases in hand-blown clear glass, each marked “Baccarat France” and “Musee des Cristalleries de Baccarat 1821-1840 / Reproduction” to bases. Next is a Baccarat “Moulin Rouge” crystal champagne bucket with octagonal body and gold tone handles, hardware, and suspended insert with removable bottle liner, etched “Baccarat France” on base.
Also of note is a 1920s Louis Comfort Tiffany Art Nouveau blue Favrile glass trumpet vase with electric azure blue hues to base and iridescent purple indigo tones to flaring lip, the glass insert mounted on a faceted patinated bronze base. The underside is struck “Louis C. Tiffany Furnaces, Inc / Favrile / 160.”
Fine jewelry and luxury goods open with a platinum diamond ring, brightly polished, featuring a centered prong set round brilliant diamond, weighing 3.19 carats, K color and VS2 clarity, including GIA report. Next is an antique compact case, fabricated in silver with brightly polished vermeil and chased surfaces, decorated with 366 bead set colored gemstones, including amethyst, blue topaz, peridot, garnet and sapphires. Watches by Omega and Rolex are included, as are Chanel handbags and Montblanc and Pelikan pens.
Additionally, Showplace will host a holiday tag Astoria warehouse sale on December 2-4 with a collection of estate finds.
