PLAINVILLE, CONN. — A highly desirable English “Necessaire de voyage” vanity box by Jenner & Knewstub is just one of the items from a New England estate, and other homes in Connecticut and Massachusetts that will be sold by Winter Associates on December 12 at its central Connecticut gallery. Also included will be a variety of fine jewelry, coins, stamps, paintings, prints, sculpture, miniature portraits, antique and benchmade furniture, Oriental rugs and books.
The vanity box is rare in its completeness, with each of the original gilt sterling fittings and toiletries present and all with London 1884 hallmarks and matching raised monogram. The case of exotic coromandel wood unfolds with an ingenious design by George Betjemann & Sons and showcases two of their sought-after inventions including the “Angle Wing Mechanism” which enables the box to cantilever out and open into six compartmented tiers, including two secret jewelry drawers with concealed spring-loaded buttons. The set is in excellent condition. For more information on the Jenner & Knewstub firm visit www.antiqueboxguide.org/jenner-and-knewstub/.
An 18K guilloche enameled snuff box, with a miniature portrait of Napoleon on its cover, is from the same New England estate; it is hallmarked with the letter “R” with a crown above it, believed to be for Jean Georges Remond & Co., Geneva. There are more than 40 other miniatures in the sale. Two other Continental pieces from the same home are automaton enamel and gilt musical boxes with singing birds, both German, early Twentieth Century, with cases by Emil Brenk and movements likely by Karl Griesbaum.
Many unusual and high-quality pieces of jewelry range from an antique rock crystal, enamel and 18K locket with a miniature of King George II to a very heavy 18K yellow gold contemporary diamond “zipper” necklace. Plique-à-jour works include two butterflies and a dragonfly that are mounted in 18K yellow gold with emeralds, opals, rubies and diamonds. A magnificent 14K diamond and ruby enameled bangle bracelet is set with 6 carats of diamonds and more than 140 natural rubies. Another impressive 18K piece is an eagle form necklace set with 91 round brilliant cut diamonds and weighing 130 grams. Also offered will be two 22K yellow gold necklaces, one with matching earrings; a platinum and diamond bangle; an 18K enameled, diamond, and ruby bird bath pendant with chain; a Jadeite pendant and earrings with diamonds; and a 14K enameled serpent bracelet with diamonds and rubies.
For those who prefer to hang their beautiful things on the wall there is a variety of artwork, including those with a strong New England flavor from an assortment of Connecticut and Massachusetts homes: a vibrant watercolor of two fisherman in rowboat by John Whorf, a native of Massachusetts and descendant of Cape Cod sea captains; an oil on canvas of cows in pasture by Charles Morris Young; a typical landscape with pond by Henry Pember Smith “View of Mill Pond, Lyme, CT”; a forest scene by Chauncey Foster Ryder; two studio etchings by Armin Landeck; and a Nineteenth Century folk art portrait of a little girl with doll in the manner of Joseph Goodhue Chandler. There is a charming bronze titled “Bedtime” by Bessie Potter Vonnoh of a sleepy child. Artwork featured of more Continental taste includes an early Nineteenth Century Italian landscape in the manner of Michele Felice Corne, two bronze sculptures after Jean de Bologne, a few Italian school oils on wood panel, and large number of drypoint etchings, aquatints and lithographs, etc by Théophile Steinlen, Paul Helleu, Louis Legrand, Jacques Villon, Manuel Robbe, Edgar Chahine, Jean Francois Raffaelli, Rene Genis and more.
Collectors of coins and currency, stamps and books will have a good assortment to choose from with 19 coin lots, including US Gold Type, a Series 1985 $20 Foldover Error note, and a 1922 $100 gold certificate. An important collection of American stamps, including a complete set of 1893 Colombian Expo zeppelins will cross the block. Also, not to be missed are 11 lots of books, including Kipling; 10 volumes by George Trevelyan, The American Revolution (N.Y. 1909); Works of William H. Prescott (Philadelphia, 1875), and many others, which will be sold to benefit a Connecticut nonprofit institution
