NEW YORK CITY — On December 18, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from New York City metropolitan area estates and collections, including art by Salvador Dali, Jason Woodside, Julia Beck, John Haynes Williams and Kayo Lennar. Other highlights include a Sir Peter Lely attributed painting and furniture by James Mont, Isamu Noguchi and Jens Risom. A wide array of silver, Parian ware, porcelain, glass, jewelry, lighting, paintings and more complete the sale.
Fine art opens with a 1973 Salvador Dali drawing of Don Quixote’s horse, Rocinante, drawn by Dali for the son of Beilin Gallery’s owner, who worked directly with Dali. The piece is housed in a giltwood frame. Next is a Sir Peter Lely attributed portrait of a lady on canvas bearing a wax seal impressed with marks from Galerie Sedelmeyer (Paris). A pair of Western landscapes by American painter Bill Freeman is followed by an etching on paper of two farmers attributed to Kathe Kollwitz and a large acrylic and aerosol trompe l’oeil painting of colorful contrasting patterns within concentric circles by Jason Woodside. There is also a Nineteenth Century antique portrait of a young woman by Swedish painter Julia Beck.
Of note is an acrylic on canvas of birds, butterflies and fish by Balinese painter Dewa Ketut Rungun. The sale also includes work by Eric Aho, Kayo Lennar and Lawrence Glickman.
Sculpture is highlighted by a bronze of a worker with the attributes of construction and labor titled “Le Travail” by French sculptor Charles-Auguste LeBourg. He executed his famous work in 1881 for the École Diderot, a trade school in Paris. It was later shown at the 1885 Paris Salon and the Paris Exposition Universelle (1889). This cast was issued in 1906, which was both the 25th anniversary of the sculpture’s commission, and also the year of the artist’s death. Also featured is a 1919 nude of a woman by Austrian sculptor Heinrich Karl Scholz.
Entertainers will find a partial Lunt sterling silver service in the Eloquence pattern comprising 76 pieces. Next is an antique George III sterling silver tea set comprising four pieces, one large lidded tea pot, one small pot, a cream jug and a double-handled sugar pot from Samuel Hennell, London, decorated with scrolling foliate rims and scalloped bodies. It is followed by a Mintons porcelain service for 12 in the Dynasty Cobalt pattern, with gilt overglaze marks for 1951 and later; the pieces all with impressed Minton marks and various date marks 1956-60, retailed by Tiffany & Co.
Traditional furnishings open with a Charles X flame-mahogany veneered cabinet with provenance from Les Deux Iles Antiques, New York. Next is a Biedermeier sofa with curved arms and two claw feet. The sale includes a pair of Chinese brass-mounted Hongmu wood Quanyi or horseshoe-back folding chairs, each with gilt brass mounts in the Ming taste.
Modern offerings include a collection of pieces by James Mont — all removed from a private New York City residence furnished by Mont. First on the block are two lots of James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern D-shaped consoles with carved ornamentation and parcel-gilt decoration, designed circa 1960. Next is a James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern dining table with an Asian motif. The table is followed by a set of five dining chairs in walnut with Asian-inspired backrests and upholstered seats. There is also a James Mont Asian Midcentury Modern monumental cream-painted chest of drawers in the Chinese Modern taste.
Lighting on offer includes a pair of Seguso midcentury Italian Murano glass table lamps with gold flecks on giltwood circular bases and an Italian Stilnovo Midcentury Modern pendant chandelier with four opaline glass spheres on brass and black enameled metal structure, circa 1950.
Decorative arts open with a Gracie Brothers hand-painted Chinese wallpaper four-panel standing screen, one side covered in four panels of paper in the “Sky Clearing” pattern depicting flowering peonies, birds and insects. It is followed by an Art Deco Steuben acid-etched green jade glass vase with a gazelle motif. Next is a Herend hand painted porcelain figural group of ducks intertwined in a loving nuzzle, base with blue and impressed “Herend 5035” marks. Also of note is a custom-bound set of vintage Paris Match magazines, consisting of 37 volumes of bound issues from 1931-62.
Jewelry and luxury goods in the sale include an Omega Seamaster professional diver watch, cased in stainless steel with stainless steel bracelet and foldover clasp actuated with a double push button safety and a black dial with luminous hands, and a rare Benrus 18K yellow gold mechanical pocket watch, cased in a brightly polished and satin finished case with reeded coin edge, featuring a bust of a lady designed in the style of the Statue of Liberty, wearing a seven-pointed crown with the word “Sovereign” engraved in the band. Also of note is a Chanel black patent leather belt with an interwoven chain and patent leather belt buckle from the 1995 spring collection.
