NEW YORK CITY — On February 5, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from estates of the New York City and metropolitan area, including works of art by Yvonne Thomas, Auguste Rodin, Victor Salmones, Nahum Tschacbasov, Pio Ricci and Irene Zavon. Other highlights include antique furniture as well as more modern furniture and decorative arts by Christian Liagre, Gae Aulenti and Ogetti Luce. A wide array of jewelry, porcelain, glass, silver, lighting, sculptures, paintings and more complete the sale.
Fine art opens with a graphite on paper drawing by Auguste Rodin depicting a recumbent nude female figure. Next is a 1987 Abstract Expressionist painting by Yvonne Thomas titled “Cinema” from the Central Park West estate of artist William Scharf. The sale includes a collection of Abstract Cubist oil paintings by Irene Zevon and Surrealist works by her husband Nahum Tschacbasov, who were both residents of New York City’s famed Chelsea Hotel. Tschacbasov was a member of the Expressionist Art group “The Ten” alongside Mark Rothko. Sculptures on offer include a grouping of work by Victor Salmones and an abstract bronze by Georges Koras.
Traditional offerings include an oil on canvas attributed to Sir Peter Lely (Dutch, 1618-1680) depicting a portrait of a lady thought to be Charlotte, countess of Lichfield. Next is an 1873 oil on canvas mounted to panel depicting a pensive lady at her writing desk in a period interior by Pio Ricci, housed in a carved giltwood frame with vine leaf patterns. Also of note is a grouping of Spanish and Continental school paintings, including a Continental school scene, after Jean-Baptiste Regnault (French, 1754-1829), “The Education of Achilles,” an oil on canvas painting depicting the centaur Chiron teaching the young Achilles how to use a bow and arrow.
The sale also includes work by Fernando Wamprechts, Gabi Klasmer, Lawrence Glickman, Kayo Lennar, Della Weinberger and Jean-Dominique Van Caulaert.
Furniture opens with a collection of English furniture with Sotheby’s provenance. First is a George II mahogany tilt-top tripod tea table, circa 1750, with a clover-shaped dished tilt top with a molded edge on tilting mechanism above an acanthus and guilloche carved turned standard support on three c-scroll carved legs terminating in rocaille-carved feet on leather casters. Next is a pair of George III period mahogany bedside cupboards, each with a tambour door above a single drawer with a hinged brown leather inset writing surface with provenance from Sotheby’s and estate of Rosemary Demarest. There is also a George II needlepoint upholstered wing back armchair with a shaped rectangular back, wings, outscrolled arms and a seat cushion upholstered in Eighteenth Century needlepoint depicting a lady and her dog with attendants in a bucolic landscape against a floral ground. The section closes with a late Eighteenth Century George III oak chest on chest with brass handles raised on bracket feet and a George II walnut long-case grandfather clock, likely Eighteenth Century, dial signed William Tennec. Also of note is a restored Harrington Pianos (subsidiary of Hardman-Peck, New York, circa 1950-60), “Venetian”-style walnut baby grand piano.
Modern offerings include a collection of furniture from the Christian Liaigre designed Mercer Kitchen at the trendy New York City Mercer Hotel in SoHo. Pieces in the sale include a long dining table, tall bar stool, dining chairs and more. The sale continues with an Eero Saarinen for Knoll low Tulip table with white metal base and white Statuarietto marble top, circa 2000s, and a Harry Bertoia upholstered Diamond Chair for Knoll. Also on offer is a Harvink Design plywood bentwood armchair with an upholstered handkerchief back and seat. Lighting includes a Gae Aulenti for Martinelli Luce, Italian Post-Modern “Pipistrello” telescopic table lamp.
Decorative arts highlights open with an Italian Art Deco Murano art glass vase attributed to Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso. Also of note is a three-piece Napoleon III French garniture set comprising a gilt-bronze mounted marble mantel clock, the timepiece with hand-painted numerals and framed by two winged sphinx figures mounted upon a yellow marble base, and two covered marble urns with reversible candlestick holder lids and ormolu Hermes masques terminating in cabriole legs upon round bases with grape bunch finials.
February 5 at Showplace will have a treasure trove of jewelry, costume jewelry and luxury goods in time for Valentine’s Day. The sale includes an 18K yellow gold heart charm bracelet, a Modernist 14K white gold and diamond heart brooch, along with Tiffany & Co Paloma Picasso Loving Heart earclips. The sale includes a collection of vintage Thierry Mugler and Judith Leiber handbags.
