CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auction’s Monday, March 6, online sale will include Sixteenth–Twentieth Century manuscripts and antiquarian books, art, sculptures, art glass, rugs, maps, photography, jewelry, sterling silver, ethnography and more.
Highlighting the art category will be a Thomas Willis nautical painting of the “America’s Cup: The Volunteer”; Eugene Lejeune French genre watercolor; Margaret Wynn’s British equestrian painting; Italian seascape painting by Fulvio, including many others from the American and European Schools.
A subset of the art category includes prints, etchings and woodblock prints. Inaugurating this section are the Japanese woodblock prints of Kawase Hasui and Kiyoshi Saito. Etchings include works by Paul Gavarni; Jan Luiken (Luyken) 1690s; Maurice L’Hoir’s “Aristophanes Lysistrata”; Jean-Gabriel Damergue’s “Afternoon of a Faune” (1924); and more. Not to be missed are lithographs by Maurice Sendak; Marcel Vertes; David Nash; Alvar Sunol; Arthur Wilson; and Picasso’s “The Basket.” Film and poster collectors will be interested in the magic poster from Chang & Fak-Hong (1920s); film memorabilia poster from The Thief of Bagdad, including ephemera (1940) and Maurice Sendak signed promotional posters, including “Where The Wild Things Are.” Illustration art includes Johnny Gruelle’s Raggedy Ann; Doc Winner’s Katzenjammer Kids (1956); Fred Pegram, Robert Doares pulp magazine art and Nicole Molinari’s Eyebulbs.
The objet d’art category is highlighted by a LeCoultre Atmos mantel clock; Wilhelm Kralik caged art glass; Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica serving tray; several Jan Barboglio iron candelabras; Edward Eberle geometric bowl; Tiffany, Baccarat, Lalique and Sevres crystal, including Nineteenth Century sterling silver.
Antiquarian book collectors will seek out the 1652 Divine Discourses by Dr Martin Luther; 1508 De Divina Natura by Marcus Tullius Cicero; 1780 Morias Enkomion by Desiderius Erasmus; Chronological Tables of Europe from the Nativity of Our Savior to the Year 1703; 1803 David Deuchar’s Hans Holbein Illustrated Dance of Death; and the 1648 Dutch Biblical figures of Gospels (Old and New Testament with biblical illustrations). Each of these books contains etchings and illustrations.
For the eclectic collector, there is a Lehmann Oh-My mechanical German tin toy (1920s); Wyandotte convertible coupe wind-up car (1939); Japanese carved wood netsuke; Indonesian carved Barong deity cattle bell; Islamic glazed tile wall panel; semi-antique hand-woven Persian rug; and many others.
The ethnographic section includes a Navajo handwoven Eye Dazzler rug; Native American polychrome pottery vessels, including from Annabelle Honie (Hopi); Native American painting by A.E. Tripp (1931); and calligraphy by the Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
Modern art collectors will be interested in the Hiro Yamagata bronze sculpture “The Big Boss”; Andy Warhol Advent Ornament Calendar designed for Tiffany & Co.; jazzed musician paintings; paintings from the outsider artist Matt Sesow; Suejin Jo and the urban graffiti artist LAII.
Limited edition signed books include James Michener, Stephen Benet and Carl Sandberg. Historic political inscribed photographs such as Thomas Dewey, Mamie Eisenhower, Strom Thurmond, Ted Kennedy, Barry Goldwater are available.
A nod to Great Britain includes items distinctive to “his” and “her” majesty. Highlighting the British section are the 1682 King Charles II manuscript parchment; an 1838 special newspaper edition announcing the coronation of Queen Victoria; royal memorabilia of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, King George VI and King Edward VIII; the 1689 Brief History of the Succession of the Crown of England and a Princess Diana gold commemorative coin.
Photograph collectors will note the World War I era photograph album of Alaska; Sam Alexander’s 1880 Photographic Scenery of South Africa; Volkmar Kurt Wentzel; a cartes de viste album of historic and literary figures, including the Etienne Carjat of Charles Baudelaire.
