GUILFORD, CONN. — Lotus International Auctions will present an online-only fine art auction on April 16 at noon. All bidding will be done through Liveauctioneers. Bidding has already started.
The auction has more than 415 artworks: oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, lithographs, Inuit sculptures, Midcentury Modern, Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman, a bronze eagle by Jules Moigniez and more will be featured. A unique historical item may be the Chinese bookends owned by missionary Willard Beard that he took out of China before the impending invasion by the Japanese; they descended down through the family (Yale University archives has his family papers).
Monhegan Island, Maine’s artist Joseph DeMartini’s semi-abstract oil painting shows harbor, studio and model. Lyme Academy of Art is represented by Allen Butler Talcott’s glowing Connecticut landscape. Harry Hoffman, another Old Lyme artist, is represented with eight of his artworks.
Alexander (Sandy) Calder has two signed lithographs in the auction, always bright colors and intriguing designs.
Peggy Bacon’s etching takes place on the New York Ferry, titled “The Promenade Deck,” a humorous view of everyday commuting boat trip. The hustle and bustle of New York life can be looked at through John Sloan’s “Bandit’s Cave” etching. Venice, Calif., serigraph artist Earl Newman shares two powerful designs to help the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
This auction has a great choice of well-known artist printers: Norman Rockwell (“School Days” folio), Joseph Pennell, Leopoldo Mendez, Eric Sloane, Louis Orr, Robert Hogg Nisbet, Charles Watson, Robert C. Ludwig, William Sharp, Inuit prints, John Hirsch, Emanuele Brugnoili and Sears Gallagher, to name a few.
A preview, April 13-14, may be possible with a call for an appointment. Lotus International Auctions is at 2470 Boston Post Road, Unit A-6. For additional information, 203-689-5062 or www.lotusauction.com.
