NEW YORK CITY — The sale of the Chinese porcelain and art collection of Dr Guillermo Rico, MD, featuring a rare Eighteenth/Nineteenth Century famille rose cricket vase as well as the contents of Rico’s New York City apartment is scheduled for May 7 at David Killen Gallery.
Among the unusual items is a pair of Nineteenth Century porcelain vases, famille verte, a Nineteenth Century sang de boeuf vase, a group of blue and white Chinese porcelain vases, a Nineteenth Century covered coral glazed porcelain box with a receipt from Ian McLean, Hong Kong and New York, a Lalique Champs Elysees chandelier, a painting of a house by Paul Emile Pissaro, Japanese ceramics and jewelry. Many of the items have original receipts.
The collection includes an Eighteenth/Nineteenth Century famille rose cricket vase with decoration of floral enamels and several large crickets among the fauna. In China, crickets are a symbol of prosperity and abundance. They are considered good luck, since they are a good omen for farmers for a plentiful season’s crop.
Dr Rico, an anesthesiologist who was born in Colombia, South America, in 1931, graduated Universidad Nacional de Colombia Facultad de Medicina and completed his medical training in Lancaster General Hospital in Pennsylvania. He was working in the hospitals of Philadelphia and Boston as early as 1965, and in New York and Brooklyn by 1968. As his reputation grew, he settled into a large apartment overlooking the East River, in one of the United Nations area luxury towers. Later in life, he married Elena and raised two boys, Andres and Juan Felipe. Enjoying his success, he began to collect art, Chinese porcelains and objects to decorate his New York City apartment. Many of the works have original receipts, provenance and history.
