BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski’s Saturday, May 20, auction features a significant collection of vintage temple art and sacred objects from Mumbai, India, from a Harvard University professor and counselor. These classics are beautifully crafted in brass, copper, silver and gold by Indian artisans. Many pieces are from the Essajees Atelier Collection of Colaba. Some were gifts from Indian dowries that have been passed down through generations.
Annual trips to India through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s brought back treasures from Mumbai and the surrounding region. In addition to Essajees Atelier Collection, the Chor Bazaar was another guaranteed source of vintage finds from post-colonial homes.
Top lots from the collection include an Eighteenth Century brass oil lamp on a stand depicting a Hindu epic story titled “Mahabharata,” a vintage four-piece silver tea set hand-crafted, circa 1960s; the coffee and tea pots and creamer have black wooden handles and all pieces are footed with a grape design. There is also a rare brass Shiva Lingam, a temple artifact depicting the embodiment of creation, the artifact being half woman, half man; a group of three antique Krishnas, a principal deity in Hinduism; and an early Twentieth Century brass 12-piece serving set with traditional Indian decorative handles.
The collection continues with more than 40 additional lots, including a 1960s traditional Indian silver service, early Nineteenth Century copper domed boxes, temple spoons, Punjab footed bowls and silver dowry bowls.
Fine art in the auction features a Luis Riccardo Falero (Spanish, 1851-1896) nude watercolor on paper, signed and dated 1880, and a Raymond Parker (American, 1922-1990) abstract of oil on paper and card.
Russian artists include a landscape by Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar (1871-1960), pastel on paper, signed and dated 1954, and an Alexandre Altmann (1878-1932), still life with flowers, oil on canvas, signed both from a Marlborough, Mass., collection.
Along with the Indian silver collection, there are two sterling silver flatware services. The first is a Wallace sterling Grand Baroque flatware service for 12, and the second is a sterling service for 12 by S. Kirk & Son that is monogrammed.
Other items of interest include an Art Deco style platinum, diamond and sapphire ring, with a 1-carat center mine cut diamond surrounded by sapphires, and a Marcello Cuneo table and chair set, marked Cattelan Italia.
As always, there is a selection of rugs, furniture and furnishings from various Florida and New England estates.
Preview is Monday-Friday, May 15-19, 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 am, and the preview is open while the auction is live.
