SEARSPORT, MAINE — DownEast Auctions has been commissioned to sell several coin and currency estates from Maine and New England. This auction to be conducted on July 29 will have an extensive amount of 90 percent silver, a collection of silver dollars, including several Carson City dollars and US currency.
A few highlights include a 1797 Draped Bust silver dollar graded by ANACS: Extremely Fine- 40 condition. The silver dollar was authorized by congress on April 2, 1792. The mint issued the first dollars in 1794. The example being offered at DownEast is only the fourth year of issue. George Washington was president and the capitol had not moved to Washington DC yet. This example has 10 stars on the left and six on the right. Some 1797 dollars were minted with nine stars on the left and seven on the right. The total mintage for both types was 7,776. An unknown amount were melted down and sent to Europe. Spanish dollars of reduced weight were traded for new American dollars. Spanish dollars circulated by law until 1857.
The auction has a selection of US currency, including obsolete, and both large and small US currency. One note is an 1896 large size $1 “Silver Certificate” named “History Instructing Youth,” but is known by collectors as the “Educational” note. It was designed by Thomas Morris, designer and chief engraver of the Bureau of Engraving & Printing.
Many consider this note to be the most beautiful note ever issued by the United States. Allegorical scenes are depicted on the face designs. A background of the Washington Monument, Capitol and the Constitution of the United States is shown in an open book. Names of 23 great American statesmen are shown in an attractive border design. Green back design: portraits of Martha and George Washington in center double ovals.
Another item is a 2021 $50 American Buffalo. This coin contains one troy ounce of .999 gold.
DownEast Auctions is conducting this auction at its auction hall, 328 East Main Street (US Route 1). For information, www.downeastauctions.com or 207-548-2393.
