CANDIA, N.H. — On August 5, Schmitt Horan & Co will conduct an eclectic sale, including antiques, Nineteenth and Twentieth Century photography, artwork, cartography, ceramics, erotica, toys and advertising. The more than 300-lot auction will be conducted in two sessions at the firm’s facility, beginning at 11:30 am. The more than 100-lot discovery portion of the sale will be open for bidding to live attendees only. The second part will consist of more than 200 lots, and will be open to internet, phone and absentee bidders, with online bidding beginning approximately 10 days prior to the live event.
Session one will include a wide variety of antiques and collectibles, sold individually and in lots of two or more. Many are ready to sell or display as they are, with others requiring varying degrees of restoration. This portion of the sale will include transfer printed ceramics with political and historical themes, tin and cast iron toys, toy guns, automobile parts, paintings and prints, musical instruments, reference books, spool cabinets, dye cabinets, beer and soda trays, petroliana and other advertising, Bohemian glass, sterling silver, a large selection of figural cast iron doorstops, fountain pens, a floor standing Moores fountain pen display case, steins, a large, mid-Twentieth Century cast iron garden gnome, a collection of unusual tobacco pipes, two lots of Vogue picture records, Black Forest carvings and a few clocks. All purchases made during this portion of the sale will require payment and removal on the day of the sale.
Session two consists of an eclectic mix of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century material. Featured in this portion of the sale will be a selection of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century photographs, including images of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston by Beaumont Newhall, “MJ in Sardinia” by Ralph Gibson, surrealist works by Jerry Uelsmann, portraits of Einstein and Churchill by Yousuf Karsh, “Les Pains de Picasso” by Robert Doisneau, Edward Weston’s “Shell 14S” printed by Cole Weston, “Imogen and Twinka at Yosemite” by Judy Dater, “Nu sur la plage” and “Geantes” by Lucien Clergue, a portrait of Alfred Stieglitz by Imogen Cunningham, “Highway 1 Big Sur” by Henry Gilpin and “Henry Miller and Twinka Thiebaud” by Mary Ellen Mark.
Other Twentieth Century images by photographers Michael Smith, John Sexton, Bruce Barnbaum and Alan Ross will be sold, as will a group of Library of Congress reprints of images by Walker Evans. Also on offer will be two large-format cameras, a Deardorff 8 x 10 with Schneider – Kreuznach and Nikon lenses, signed by Cole and Paulette Weston, and a Kodak Empire State No. 1, with tripod, Rodenstock lens and Wollensack shutter, heavy duty Schiansky tripod and aluminum travel case.
A large number of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes will also be offered, the subjects to include Civil War soldiers, postmortems and family groups. Other photography related items will include a large assortment of stereoviews, including French tissue type and images featuring William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Warren Harding, William H. Taft, Calvin Coolidge and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Stereo viewers will include a burl walnut veneered revolving stereoscope, a burl walnut veneered stereo graphoscope and others.
A small selection of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century prints and paintings will also be sold, including a Prior-Hamblin School oil on artist’s board portrait of a young man, a very large portrait of James S.T. Stranahan by Jared B. Flagg, a large lithograph by Norman Rockwell titled “America Marches Ahead,” a large lithograph titled “In Resplendent Places” by Arnold Belkin, a large drypoint etching titled “Orchids” by Louis Icart and a colored woodcut titled “Cerberus Inferno Canto 6” by Salvador Dali. Other art objects include five Western-themed bronzes by Leonard “Gus” Shafer and a selection of Twentieth Century art glass. A few lots of Twentieth Century erotica will also be sold, including 30 heliogravures from “Bilder aus dem Boudoir der Madame” by Franz von Bayros, a folio containing 13 erotic works by Alexander Szekely and others.
Ceramics dating to the late Eighteenth-Twentieth Century are also featured in the sale, including two late Eighteenth Century Chinese export cider jugs, a Chinese export punch bowl with ships flying American flags, a small quantity of historical blue Staffordshire, a selection of Native American pottery, a substantial quantity of Wedgwood blue jasper and a few basalt pieces, three 6-gallon stoneware churns, all with cobalt slip decoration.
A selection of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century furniture will be sold, including two New England candlestands, one with inlaid top, a New England Hepplewhite one-drawer stand with curly birch top, a Victorian walnut etagere, a few stick and ball pieces, a Mount Lebanon Shaker-type rocking armchair, two early Twentieth Century Black Forest carved hall trees with bears, a Black Forest stand with bear, display pedestals of marble, walnut and mahogany with carved and inlaid ornament and more.
