WILLOUGHBY. OHIO — Dana J. Tharp Auctions is highlighting its 2023 summer auction on August 5, which features a historical group of one Cleveland resident’s lifetime advertising collection. The collection highlights rare and unusual signs, coin-operated machines, posters, beverage trays and vintage seating. The auction has a definite breweriana theme throughout, including older neon and light-up signs from regional breweries.

The sale features advertising light-up clocks from the Pam company, older signs from Countryman, unique beverage bottles from Cleveland, soda pop coolers and vending machines, thermometers, porcelain and cardboard signs. There are a number of novelty items in the auction, including a Jayne Mansfield hot water bottle in the original packaging.

There will be an opportunity to bid on “The Kid From Cleveland,” a 1949 original one sheet movie poster. The poster features “The Story of a Kid…a City… and 30 Godfathers!”

The auction cumulates with the 1939 show-stopping sign “Death Rides With The Drinking Driver” from the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), which was formed in 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio. The WCTU, was a religious organization that fought for societal reforms and abstinence. This rare sign is an early example of its work to combat driving while drunk.
