SUDBURY, MASS. — Tremont Auctions announces the Bistany collection of Chinese snuff bottles, a single-owner auction of more than 500 lots, to be conducted Sunday, October 22, at 10 am EST. Public preview begins October 16, and the auction will be conducted both live in the gallery and online. An online catalog is available starting September 27.

This curated collection of snuff bottles is among the largest and most significant group to come to market in years. Mitchell Bistany (1928-2023) of Sudbury built this collection beginning in the 1960s. He became intrigued by snuff bottles while browsing a booth waiting for his wife to shop a local antiques show. Secretly, she bought him three bottles from the booth and made a Christmas gift of them. She launched his collecting, and the rest is history.

Bistany was an award-winning photographer in both technical and artistic fields. For six decades he trained his eye to finding the very best examples of Chinese snuff bottles. As an early member of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, he quickly earned the respect of his peers as an accomplished collector. His collection encompasses all varieties of bottles, including interior painted rock crystal, carved stone, amber, silver, bronze, porcelain and Peking glass. Numerous examples are from the imperial workshops and of the highest quality. Rare and significant examples are found throughout the collection.

As a Korean War veteran, Bistany has dedicated the proceeds of this auction to the benefit of Wounded Warriors.
