BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski’s August 19-20 estate auction features the art collection of William Frew, a pilot for more than 30 years flying for the United States Air Force and later Trans World Airways. His collection of Japanese prints is from his great uncle Bernard Frew, who was secretary for US General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. There is also a collection of Chelsea clocks and barometers from John McCarthy, the Chelsea Clock Co. foreman for 30 years, and an extensive collection of European furniture and decorative furnishings from a southern Connecticut estate. The second day of the auction features the furnishings and garden antiques from a Bunny Williams and John Rosselli decorated Palm Beach home. All items can be previewed in Palm Beach by appointment only by calling 941-928-2872/ 561-779-8511. Transportation along the Route 95 Northeast corridor is available and to Kaminski’s Beverly auction gallery.
William Frew flew KC135s in the Air Force and then flew Constellations, 747s and L1011s for TWA. During his career as a pilot, he became interested in collecting art and would frequently acquire new works through auctions or directly from several local artists. After retiring, his love of art led him to become an artist himself, doing numerous oil landscapes. For those interested, he had two memoirs published under the title A Pilot’s Life. His collection includes artists such as Robert Douglas Hunter, Mary Hean Pearle, Thomas R. Dunlay, the British artist Reginald Aspinwall, RA (1858-1921) and the Nineteenth Century Dutch artist H. Kleintjes.
The Japanese paintings in his collection are from his great uncle Bernard Frew, who was not only secretary for General MacArthur during World War II but then worked as an ambassador to the Vatican in Japan and Rome.
A noteworthy painting in the sale is an oil on canvas by the Russian artist Ivan Augustovitch Veltz (1866-1926). Titled “First Snow,” signed and dated 1904, it includes a Bonham’s auction tag and is identified as the Dowager’s Palace ($45/55,000).
The Chelsea clock and barometer collection comes from John McCarthy, credited with saving the company during a fire in 1978 through his quick action and leadership. Some highlights from the collection include a rare Chelsea yacht wheel clock and barometer and ship’s bel, in brass on a mahogany base, a prototype for the set made for Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, fleet admiral of the US Navy and commander in chief of the US Pacific Fleet during World War II. There is also a circa 1930 Chelsea Willard banjo clock with the Constitution and the Guerriere reverse painted on a 6-inch dial in a mahogany case.
An extensive collection of European furniture and furnishings from a southern Connecticut estate includes an early Nineteenth Century French classical center table having marble top and ormolu mounts, a pair of French marquetry Inlaid marble top chests and various gilt candelabra and other decorative pieces.
On Sunday, August 20, the auction will feature the furnishings and garden antiques from the Bunny Williams and John Rosselli decorated Palm Beach home.
The collection includes Biedermeier, English Regency and French furniture, an antique Oushak rug and garden antiques, including urns, stone benches and a monumental stone fountain of a statue of David in a circular basin.
The highlight of the jewelry on offer is a star ruby double ring with natural corundum set in 18K gold ($6/9,000).
Other items of interest in the auction include two Louis Vuitton suitcases sold by Arthur Gilmore, N.Y., from a Palm Beach estate, a collection of Victorian tin pressed store ceiling tiles, all original, 292 square feet in total, from a New Brunswick, Canada, collection, and several gold coins and pieces of Asian porcelain.
