In addition to being a well-known Philadelphia businessman and telecommunications pioneer, Bill was passionate about learning and collecting. Arguably one of the most important collections was his vintage coffee mills and grinders, most of which are in their original untouched condition. As a longtime member of the Association of Coffee Mill Enthusiasts (ACME), Bill amassed a robust collection with examples spanning the last 150 years – American and International – with makers such as Enterprise, Fairbanks Morse & Co., Henry Troemner, Landers Frary & Clark, Star Mill, Elgin National and others. One of the finest pieces in the collection is a rarely seen large Enterprise belt-driven double hopper grinder and pulverizer. A similar example is illustrated in “The MacMillan Index of Antique Coffee Mills”. Another fine example is lot a John C. Dell & Son No. 9 floor model coffee mill with an unusual, beveled mirror hopper.
