BRANFORD, CONN. — New England Auctions’ annual two-day Americana auction is scheduled for January 10-11. This auction comprises Americana, folk art and Native American material from various estates and collections. A collection of items will be presented for sale on these two days, kicking off the New Year with fresh offerings for collectors.
Highlighting the first day will be a rare, large Indian archer weathervane. Attributed to J.L. Mott of Mott Iron Works of New York, this weathervane is molded from sheet copper. Coming from the well-curated collection of Ron and Penny Dionne, it has a fine gilded surface.
Americana and painting collectors will not be disappointed. With many choices to consider, one that stands out is an example of the work of James Buttersworth. The first day of the auction will include his “Clipper Ship Stag Hound” oil on canvas from approximately 1850. The Stag Hound was launched on December 7, 1850, in East Boston, Mass. She was briefly the largest merchant ship in the world. This example of Buttersworth’s artistry is exceptional in its attention to detail, color palette and drama. Provenance for this and many other paintings in this sale comes from the early collection of the Forsyth Wickes family. In addition, there is a portrait of a child by the folk painter John Brewster.
There are also many great choices for furniture collectors to savor. Among them is a Connecticut Queen Anne highboy, circa 1765, brought in from the collection of Chris and Elaina Wieser. This highboy presents itself as an unusual Eighteenth Century time capsule with its undisturbed surface and condition. A prime example of a tall clock by the early clockmaker Simon Willard is also presented in day one. A rare set of six Queen Anne chairs in original red paint are also a standout in this category.
To round out the first day of the sale is a large collection of American samplers from the collection of the late Ann Fassnacht. These choice examples were curated and heavily researched over many years.
Day two features antiques and works of art from estates and collections, including the contents of the Thomas and Stephany Haines and Forsyth Wickes families of Connecticut. From the Forsyth Wickes estate is an oil on canvas by Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903). Noted for his Orientalist works, this American painter is highly prized, with this example featuring a colorful rendition of figures in a courtyard with a fountain. The colors, light and detail are brilliant in this painting.
Dealers and collectors alike will find something that pleases with this vast array of fine paintings, furniture, folk art, weathervanes, samplers, Asian antiques and more.
The firm’s website has a comprehensive listing of the sale.
