OWEGO, N.Y. — On March 17, Pegasus Auctions will conduct an estate auction featuring the property of a lady, including some rare and important items from a prominent Olean, N.Y., estate. A highlight of the sale will feature a fresh-to-the-market and rare Northwood water pitcher and tumbler set. The pitcher is done in cranberry opalescent glass in a rare daffodil pattern. The pitcher has its accompanying original four matching tumblers. The cranberry color and opalescence is heavy and the daffodil decoration is rich and busy. The unusually large amount of extra detail and quantity of floral decoration further accentuates the rarity and value of this example.
Exceptional glass from the estate is further represented by a large cranberry glass oil lamp. The lamp is in blown cranberry glass with floral enamel and gilt decoration throughout. In addition, this lamp is most unusual in that it comprises three separate pieces, a base, a font and a shade, each with appropriate brass fittings. Further, the font has a duplex or double burner and is marked duplex on the dual enameled knobs. The duplex knobs were developed in 1865 and provided for a parallel wick system to enhance the light created. Circa 1870, the lamp stands 26 inches in height.
Art pottery is represented by a rare Moorcroft pottery bowl. The piece is elaborately decorated with pomegranates in rich vibrant colors. The bowl is signed in blue on the underside with a large full Moorcroft signature.
Another highlight will be an estate collection comprising a quantity of ephemera. This will include autographs such as the Robert F. Kennedy assassination, White House stationery, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, photographs of Elvis Presley and more.
One special item of note is an original letter to the Western Union telegraph company from Boston in 1884 pertaining to the notification and cost of laying the first telegraph cable to Martha’s Vineyard. The original cost at the time was $175.
An estate collection of movie posters, postcards, baseball and other ephemera will also be included.
Rounding out the sale will be a Native American large kachina doll, as well as many interesting and unusual estate items.
The sale will take place at 1 pm at the Owego Moose Lodge, 3 Goodrich Road. For information, www.pegasusauctionsny.com or 607-724-3567.
