ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Michaan’s Auctions’ March gallery auction on Friday, March 15, features artworks from notable artists in addition to examples from the jewelry and Asian art departments. The auction is led by the fine art department, which will be offering an oil painting by Frank Duveneck and a lithograph by Stow Wengenroth. Also included in the sale is a contemporary artwork by Pratchaya Charernsook, a micromosaic gold brooch and a gold pocket watch.
Frank Duveneck’s “Meadow Village View,” oil ($7/10,000) is a work from the famed Kentucky-born and German-trained Realist painter, as well as “Man Reading,” oil ($4/6,000). Also available is Marvin Bentley Lipofsky’s “California Sketch,” glass ($2,5/3,500), an example from the famed Wisconsin glass artist and UC Berkeley professor. These works will be offered alongside prints, including a work by a member of the Young British Artists, Chris Ofili, “Rainbow Series,” five drypoints ($2,5/3,500), and a piece by the renowned American printmaker, Stow Wengenroth, “New York Nocturne,” 1945, lithograph ($5/8,000).
The jewelry department is highlighting several pieces this month, including a Victorian Etruscan micromosaic, 14K yellow gold brooch ($1,5/2,500); a pair of jadeite jade, diamond, 18K white gold earrings ($1,5/2,500); an International Watch Co. 18K yellow gold pocket watch ($2/3,000), a classic and refined example from the Swiss watch manufacturer; as well as two brooches, a Victorian sardonyx cameo, diamond, 18K yellow gold brooch ($1/1,500) and a multi-stone Butterfly brooch ($1,8/2,500).
The furniture and decorative department is highlighting an example from Louis Comfort Tiffany, a Tiffany Studios table lamp #445 with dome shade ($1/1,500), as well as German porcelain, including a lot of three Lamm Dresden porcelain cabinet cups and saucers ($1/1,500). Also on offer are two lots of tableware, including an Old Mission Kopper Kraft eucalyptus bowl ($800-$1,200) and a Mason’s and Ashworth’s ironstone dinner service ($7/1,000). The department will also be presenting a Federal comb back bench, possibly Pennsylvanian ($1/2,000).
The Asian art department will be offering four paintings by contemporary artists, each of which was recently exhibited at the Minnesota Street Project. These works include Pratchaya Charernsook, “Evening Time” ($4/5,000) and Siriroj Kotwongsa, “Cloud Street” ($3,5/4,000), each representing a unique opportunity to collect early career work from emerging artists. Also from the December 2023 show is Mathus Kaewdam, “Nothing Here?” ($2/3,000), as well as Takdanai Kungsavarangkul, “Outside the Window” ($1,4/1,600). The department will offer a famille rose floral vase in a Japanese box ($1,5/2,500), an example of the floral painting techniques of the Qing dynasty.
