ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Michaan’s gallery auction on Friday, May 17, features furniture, lighting and decorative pieces from the furniture and decorations department, in addition to works from notable artists in the Asian art department and a number of pieces from the jewelry departments. The auction is led by the furniture and decorations department, which will be offering a salon set, chandeliers and tables in French and Italian styles, while the Asian art department offers works of calligraphy and painting by Chinese artists. Also included in the sale are platinum, diamond and gold items, including works by Eric De Kolb.
The furniture and decorations department is highlighting a Syrian mother-of-pearl and silver metal inlaid five-piece salon set, including a sofa and side chair ($6/8,000), a collection full of inlaid metal details as rich red upholstery. Next is a example of Neoclassical design, a pair of French dore bronze lanterns ($7/8,000) and a Barbedienne onyx and ormolu clock garniture ($2/4,000).
Also on offer is a pair of gilt bronze mounted famille verte bowls ($2/3,000) featuring detailed gilt work supporting an intricately painted bowl and a Reed Barton Spanish baroque pattern sterling flatware ($1,8/2,500). Finally, the department will be offering a William and Mary oyster veneer chest of drawers ($800-$1,400) and an Arthur Stone sterling silver kettle on stand ($800-$1,400) each with craftsmanship of uncommon sophistication.
An assortment of calligraphy and painted works by important artists, in addition to items in wood and porcelain from the Asian Art Department. A piece attributed to Yu Youren: pair of calligraphy couplet ($2/3,000) will lead the sale, an opportunity to own a work by the anti-imperialist activist and founder of Shanghai University. Following this work is attributed to Guan Shanyue: “Landscape” Chinese painting ($2/3,000), a landscape from the modern Chinese artists, and after Qiang Xuan (1239-1299) painting on silk ($1,5/2,500), part of the Chinese nationalist response to the Mongolian-led Yuan dynasty. Also on offer is a scroll painting attributed to Zhang Daqian: ‘”Lady Under Wutong Tree” ($1/1,500), as well as a large Chinese scholar’s rocks lingbi stone. ($1/1,500), a Liu Hanjun: “Landscape Series” oil painting ($1/1,500) and a work attributed to Zhang Daqian: “Calligraphy in Running Script” ($1/1,500).
The jewelry department is highlighting several pieces, including two items by Austrian jeweler Eric De Kolb. The Eric De Kolb 14K yellow gold necklace ($1,5/2,500) will lead the sale, followed by two Rolex wristwatches, a Rolex Air-King wristwatch ($1,5/2,500), and a Rolex No. 6090 wristwatch ($1,5/2,500). Also on the block is a collection of five Chinese yellow gold pendants and rings ($800-$1,200), as well as a garnet, diamond, 18K yellow gold ring ($800-$1,200) and a garnet, yellow gold bracelet ($800-$1,200).
The fine art department is headlined by the sale of two landscape works by California-based artists, James M. Phillips, “Palace of the Fine Arts,” watercolor ($800-$1,200), as well as Ray Roberts, “Hyalite Lake,” oil ($800-$1,200). These works will be offered alongside a sculpture, Bob and Tom Bennett, “Abstract Compositions,” two bronzes ($700-$1,000), and additional well-regarded oil works, including, David Chapple, “Spring Rains,” oil ($600/800), after Adolph Tidemand, “Grandmother Darling,” oil ($500/700), and Jacquelynn Kresman, “Carmel Kelp,” oil ($500/700), among others works.
