POTSDAM, N.Y. — One of the most important angling auctions in decades, the spring sale by Blanchard’s Auction Service and Lang’s Auction will include historic lures and their rare “picture” boxes. These highly sought boxes, the majority dating from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, are especially desirable as they feature a graphic illustration of the lure. The collections offered in this auction are also unusual as many of the picture boxes are in excellent condition, a rare designation for lure boxes of this age.
Included in the first day of the auction, which will be conducted online and attended by a live audience, will be a rare circa 1859 Haskell Minnow made by Riley Haskell of Painesville, Ohio. Many will remember the name Riley Haskell as his largest bait, the “Giant” Haskell Minnow, sold in 2003 for $101,200 — a record auction price for an antique lure. With the same extraordinary workmanship and details, the Haskell Minnow offered in the upcoming auction measures 5-5/8 inches overall and was produced in the same era as the “Giant.” The Haskell Minnow is believed to be the most coveted American lure ever made.
Also featured in this auction are comprehensive collections of early Miller’s Reversible Minnows, several in their rare boxes, and introductory black Shakespeare boxes housing the correct baits, as well as many other obscure short-production lures.
Interspersed throughout the first 730 lots will be the lure collection of Sheridan Jones. Referred to as “America’s pioneering outdoor writer,’ Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Jones, where noted, owned a number of the lures offered in this auction — many were given to the esteemed author for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: “Jones’ legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today.”
There will also be desirable reels and exceptional bamboo rods, such as an 8-foot Lyle Dickerson Model 8014, 7-foot Walt Carpenter “Special Project” Payne fly rod, Darrell Whitehead custom fly rod set, 8-foot-3-inch Sweetgrass 5-sided fly rod, 7-foot-5-inch Mario Wojnicki Penta fly rod, 7½-foot Leonard Pre-Fire Fairy Catskill, 7½-foot R.D. Taylor Model 25-4-319, and a 7-foot-10-inch Scott bamboo fly rod, most in unused condition.
The second day, designated as the Sportsmen’s Auction, will include more than 1,500 lots of fishing and hunting related antiques and collectibles. A huge assortment for the novice collector as well as items for the most advanced collection.
The auction will be conducted at 1891 Morley-Potsdam Road. For additional information, www.blanchardsauctionservice.com, www.langsauction.com or 315-265-7653.
