MARION, MASS. — On May 4, Marion Antique Auctions will sell nearly 650 lots drawn from across New England and Florida estates. This eclectic sale begins with an assemblage of paintings by New Bedford artists. There are four paintings by Charles Henry Gifford, one of which was featured in the November 1986 Antiques Magazine article titled “The Little Gems of Charles Henry Gifford.” It is called “Pulling the Dory Ashore” and is dated 1893. It was part of the Elliot Knowles collection, Nonquitt, South Dartmouth, Mass. Marion Auctions sold this collection about 10 years ago and is now offering this little gem again.
A painting by Fairhaven artist Lemuel D. Eldred was rescued at the last minute by the estate attorney as it was about to go into a dumpster. It depicts a beach scene on Naushon Island with cabanas and female figures. Another beach scene by Chauncey Foster Ryder is expected to do well. European artists are well represented with a Felix Ziem “Venetian Canal Scene” and Arturo Cerio, “Terrace on Capri.”
A portrait of Jacob Schweighauser Otto is another highlight. He was instrumental in the opening of the Erie Canal. The towns of Otto and East Otto, N.Y., are named after him. The painting is attributed to Thomas Sully. There are also works attributed to William Trost Richards and Alexander Francis Harmer. A highly detailed painting by Charles Dater Weldon titled “Old Dresses” was a late addition to this sale. Providence and Fall River schools are well represented in this sale by works by George A. Hays, George Whitaker and others.
A large bronze sculpture of boxers by Mahonri MacKintosh Young, titled “Right to the Jaw” bears the Parisian foundry mark of Valsuani who also did work for Rodin. It was modeled in 1926.
This auction offers a diverse selection of sterling and coin silver items led by three monumental silver yachting trophies. The best one was hand wrought in the workshop of Arthur Stone by Herbert A. Taylor in 1913, a prize from the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mass., awarded to Elena, which was owned by Morton Plant, railroad baron, philanthropist and avid yachtsman.
The sale includes silver made by Tiffany, Cartier, Georg Jensen, Reed & Barton, Dominick & Haff and many more. There are 13 sterling silver flatware sets, but the standout by far is a 181-piece Tiffany Bamboo pattern set and a five-piece Tiffany Bamboo tea set. There is also a large hand hammered bowl by Herbert A. Taylor for Arthur Stone, a group of seashell-form Gorham pieces in the rare Narragansett pattern, Tiffany serving pieces and 21-coin silver forks by Frederick Marquand of Savannah, Ga. From a Newport, R.I., estate comes a small collection of sterling silver by Alfredo Sciarotta. A coin silver sugar bowl once owned by British author William Thackeray was given to American singer Isabel Lathrop by Thackeray’s daughter, Lady Anne Thackeray Ritchie in 1916. The oldest piece of silver is an Eighteenth Century cann once owned by Captain Theodosius Fowler, a hero of the American Revolution, a successful merchant and friend of Alexander Hamilton.
Some interesting timepieces in this sale include an Elmer Stennes shelf clock. Stennes was from Weymouth, Mass., and worked in the Twentieth Century. He is known for murdering his wife and was incarcerated in Plymouth, Mass., Correctional Institute where he was allowed to set up a clock-making shop, and this clock was made during this period in his career. An Aaron Willard shelf clock, circa 1800, a federal tall case Roxbury clock and a New Bedford shelf clock by Kelley and Shephard will cross the block. There are also watches made by Rolex, Cartier, Movado, Concord, Tiffany and LeCoultre.
A collection of weathervanes is highlighted by a Nineteenth Century copper running horse weathervane, a Victorian banner weathervane and eagle and rooster weathervanes.
A collection of blue-decorated stoneware is led by a rare jug with a seagull motif as well as advertising containers from New York and Pennsylvania. An interesting pair of life-size cigar store trade figures, circa 1920, in old paint, were discovered in a local flea market. Also on offer is a group of country furniture, baskets and woodenware.
Leading the midcentury offerings is an acid-etched Chan coffee table by Phillip and Kelvin LaVerne and a pair of pendant lamps by Massimo Vignelli. Of particular historical interest is an oyster plate made by Haviland Limoges, designed by Theodore Russell Davis for the presidential service of Rutherford B. Hayes.
A contemporary dining set made by Harvey Ellis for Stickley design features a table, six chairs and breakfront.
There are more than 50 lots of American antique wicker from Mary Jean McLaughlin’s Connecticut estate. These pieces are the ones Mary Jean had decided to keep, but unfortunately, she passed away earlier this year, and this auction contains many items from her estate. One of the special wicker offerings is a rare 1920s Art Deco fanback parlor set in the original factory paint.
