NEW YORK CITY — On May 5, Auctions at Showplace will present its spring 2024 fine art and design sale with 280 lots of fine and decorative arts sourced directly from New York City-area estates and collections. Offerings include art by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alfred Jensen, Diego Giacometti, Henry Moore, Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Joan Miró and Henri Matisse; art glass by Tiffany and Galle, lighting and furnishings by Gio Ponti, Paavo Tynell and Louis Majorelle; jewelry by Mario Buccellati and more.
Highlights include a rare Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, “Moulin Rouge: La Goulue,” printed in 1891. As noted by the Art Institute of Chicago, “‘Moulin Rouge, La Goulue’ was Toulouse-Lautrec’s first commissioned poster, created to advertise the performance of dancer La Goulue and acrobat Valentin le Desossé at the iconic Montmartre dance hall.” Also featured is Alfred Julio Jensen’s “Yucatec,” an abstract oil painting from 1969. This piece was a part of the Cordier and Ekstrom exhibition “Alfred Jensen: The Perspective Structure of a Square,” New York, March 11 to April 4, 1970. Also of note is a set of upholstered Knoll armchairs and sofa in fabric by Gianni Versace that had previously sold at Sotheby’s “The Collection of Gianni Versace,” sale in April 2021 and features prominently in the book Gianni Versace: Do Not Disturb.
Sculpture on offer includes “Le Couple” bronze sculpture by Diego Giacometti, Henry Moore’s “Reclining Figure: Stiff Leg,” Jeff Koons’ porcelain sculpture titled “Balloon Dog (Red)” and a Dale Patrick Chihuly lapis blue glass sculpture.
Paintings on offer open with an untitled double-sided abstract watercolor by Hans Hoffman painted in 1944. Also of note are “Coutre-Jour de Soir” by Andre Cottavoz and “Evening Segovia” by Ernest Lawson. The sale also includes Walter Darby Bannard’s 1964 “Powder II” oil on canvas with provenance from Sotheby’s, Kasmin Limited, Collection of Carter Burden, and Barbara Ross Interiors.
The auction features an extensive collection of prints and multiples. Of note is Andy Warhol’s iconic 1983 silkscreen of the Brooklyn Bridge and a screenprint “Pumpkin 2000 (Red)” by Yayoi Kusama. Next is Joan Miro’s 1969 aquatint in colors “Le Caissier” (The Cashier) followed by Henri Matisse’s 1935 etching “Nu au Fauteuil” (Nude in the Armchair). Also on offer are Ellsworth Kelly lithographs untitled (Blue Curve) and “Orient Beach.” Also featured are works by Sam Francis, Frank Stella and Robert Rauschenberg.
Furnishings on offer at Showplace include a custom designed Gio Ponti coffee table, a Stenevik Eriksson and Gosta Berg for Fritz Hansen “Seagull” chair and ottoman and a Louis Majorelle (French, 1859-1926) Art Nouveau ash and mahogany dining room suite, circa 1900. The sale also includes pieces by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Christian Krekels, Osvaldo Borsani and Poul Kjaerholm.
A grouping of photography from the estate of an Upper East side collector will cross the block with works on offer by Shirin Neshat, Abelardo Morell, Stephane Couturier, Andreas Feininger, Michael Kenna, Ralston Crawford and others. Decorative arts offerings include a collection of early art glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Daum Nancy and Emile Galle. Also of note is a Modernist framed mirror by Paolo Venini and several lots of Pablo Picasso ceramic platters.
Jewelry offerings include a Mario Buccellati vintage 18K diamond bangle, a vintage Mario Buccellati 18K yellow gold braided necklace, a Tagliamonte 14K Medusa pendant and 18K necklace and Marina B white gold diamond ring. Luxury goods by Chanel and Fendi are also on offer.
