CAMDEN, S.C.— Wooten & Wooten presents its May 25 catalog auction, “Spring Collections at Auction.” This sale features objects offered from estates and collections in Charleston, S.C., and Charlotte, N.C., among other places, and features a diverse variety of sterling silver, furniture, art, jewelry, carpets and Southern stoneware, along with European and American decorative arts.
“We are honored to offer a recently discovered oil on canvas by Charles Bargue (French, 1825-1883) from the brilliant collection of Mrs Mabel Caldwell Hill,” said auctioneer Jeremey Wooten. “Mrs Hill, a native of Aiken, S.C., assembled a stunning collection during her travels throughout Europe in the 1940s.” Mrs Hill’s husband, an engineer during World War II, helped design parachutes, including the one that Amelia Earhart used in her first parachute jump. Mrs Hill traveled the world with him and purchased art from some of the top dealers in Europe. The piece, titled “The Arab Smoker,” is signed and has been authenticated. An influential artist, Vincent Van Gogh taught himself to draw using Bargue’s drawing course “Cours De Dessin.” Bargue’s pieces can be found in prominent collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
An additional highlight in the auction is a rare bound copy of The Edgefield Hive Newspaper (Volume 1 No. 1-52). Dating to 1830, this is one of fewer than five known copies surviving of Abner Landrum’s famous Hive Newspaper. Potter and poet David Drake are said to have learned to read and write by helping to set the type for this newspaper and it is possible that David himself helped to set the press for this very copy. This piece comes directly from the collection of Edgefield collectors and scholars Steven and Terry Ferrell, and Wooten and Wooten said it is thrilled to be able to offer this important part of South Carolina history at auction.
