BEDFORD VILLAGE, N.Y. — On Sunday, March 23, Butterscotch Auction will present more than 600 lots of fine and decorative arts sourced from local estates and collectors, in what auctioneer and appraiser Brendan B. Ryan calls “the best assortment of material we have had in years.” While the auction boasts several high-ticket items, Ryan explains that what stands out to him about the sale is “a high proportion of really interesting objects that had clearly been hard-won and prized by the people who collected them.”
Among the various collections in the sale, one in particular — the lifelong work of an important, now deceased collector of mainly German Expressionist and early Modern art — features an extremely rare, unique impression of the first state of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Au Moulin Rouge, la Goulue et sa Soeur.” With provenance dating back to 1928 and an impressive exhibition history, the print is being offered with a presale estimate of $30/50,000.
Other lithographs and etchings on offer from the same collection include works by German Expressionists Emil Nolde, Max Pechstei and Erich Heckel.
More than 50 lots come from the estate of a local Armonk, N.Y., dentist who had an indisputable passion for collecting in a wide variety of fields, from Modernist prints to Chinese and pre-Columbian antiquities, American folk art carvings and trade signs, scientific instruments, hotel bells and counters, match safes and even early blow torches. A complete, hardly ever opened portfolio of Marc Chagall’s Cirque, Lithographies Originales de Marc Chagall, Paris, 1967, leads the collection with an estimate of $50/100,000. Also of note are a carved and painted “Prancer” carousel horse by famed carousel carvers Gustav and William Dentzel, circa 1900, in restored condition ($3/5,000); a George III mahogany mantel clock by John Fladgate, London ($3/5,000); and several pieces of Tang dynasty pottery.
Items from the estate of the late Dr Lynn G. Heckman, whose collection of book-shaped boxes had recently been exhibited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, are also included in the sale. More than 45 lots ranging from American paintings and sculpture to Rookwood pottery and Art Deco jewelry encompass the selection, which is led by Bessie Potter Vonnoh’s “In Grecian Draperies,” a bronze from a small edition of 8, which has a presale estimate of $12/18,000.
The sale boasts an assortment of Chinese porcelain and jade from various owners. A pair of rare, yellow-ground porcelain “boys” bowls, possibly dating to the reign of the emperor Yongzheng (1722-35), will be offered at $20/30,000, and a set of four 9-inch jadeite dishes with Qianlong marks that are thought to date to the early Twentieth Century are in at $8/12,000, among others.
A few additional standout items include a three-stone round brilliant diamond ring with a central 4.69-carat diamond of F color, rated VS1 ($100/130,000); a published example of a French gilt bronze “Pendule a l’Elephant” mantel clock, Godefroy, Paris, Nineteenth Century, purchased by the descendant at Christie’s, New York in 2000 ($15/20,000); a chased “Bernard” silver wine cooler, the period of William IV, circa 1834-35, by John & William Bernard, London ($6/9,000); a rare miniature gilt brass and copper casket attributed to Michael Mann, Nuremberg, circa 1600 ($3/5,000) (one of two early Nuremberg caskets in the sale); a 1967 charcoal drawing by Bernard Buffet ($12/18,000); and a 1979 abstract landscape by American artist March Avery, titled “Austrian Alps” ($10/20,000).
The auction will be conducted at 608 Old Post Road (Historical Hall). Bidding is available in person, by phone, through the gallery’s website, and through LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable. A selected preview will be by appointment.
