ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Michaan’s Auctions’ final Gallery Auction of the year will be conducted on December 13. The firm’s jewelry & timepieces department is sure to stun, with more than 80 lots and counting of fine, visually interesting jewelry. The furniture & decorations department boasts a large collection of Moulthrop turned wood bowls from the three generations of Moulthrop men, and the fine art department is offering many of F. Michael Wood’s paintings, as well as more Han Snel pastel work. Finally, the Asian art department will be offering an assortment of beautiful pieces, including plenty of pottery and porcelain.
To start, the jewelry & timepieces department is offering a Chinese US gold coin, 24K yellow gold bracelet ($3/5,000), which features several Chinese gold coins, and forms a beautiful statement bracelet.
The furniture & decorations department is proud to offer a large collection of Moulthrop wood bowls. Most notably, an Edward Moulthrop turned burly red maple bowl ($4/5,000), which features a round foot pedestal. Continuing with the decorative wares theme, furniture & decorations is also offering a Toshiko Takaezu Studio pottery rattle vase ($3/5,000).
Of the fine art offerings, the F. Michael Wood oil on Masonite, “Gateway,” ($1/2,000) is a highlight in both visual interest and significance. Following the success of Han Snel paintings in the past, the firm is offering a few more Snel artworks, including a chalk drawing, “Young Woman” ($1/2,000).
Michaan’s Asian art department has its fair share of fine works on offer, including a Chinese blue and white porcelain lotus moon flask vase ($1/1,500). The vase features finely painted designs upon a stark white, delicate porcelain base. The department is also offering two Japanese swords, katana and tanto ($800-$1,200), which come with metal scabbards (saya). Their hilts (tsuka) are carved with tiger figures, cherry blossom trees and other symbols.
Finally, the firm is offering a Spanish Cuerica rug ($600-$1,000) from its rugs, carpets and textiles department, and two US 1915 $20 gold coin lots, both with an estimate of $2,25/2,500 from the stamps, coins and ephemera department.
Michaan’s Auctions is also preparing for its second Fine Sale of the year. In addition to its monthly Gallery and Annex auctions, December brings Michaan’s exciting and ultra-luxurious Winter Fine Sale back to Alameda on December 16.
The furniture & decorations department is offering a Schimmel Pegasus Black grand piano ($50/80,000). The piano is one of 14 ever made from Schimmel, a luxury piano company backed by German engineering. Three of the 14 Pegasi have been owned by Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Eddie Murphy, and this particular edition has lived in the home of Susan Carson, a now-retired Stockton radio station owner and self-described dilettante.
Not the biggest fan of jazz music? The Furniture & Decorations department has plenty of other stunning pieces on offer in the Winter Fine Sale, and they are just as exciting as the culturally important Pegasus Piano. First, a Napoleon III pietra dura cabinet ($25/35,000). This piece is from the mid 1800s, likely created during Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign as Emperor of the French. The cabinet features pietra dura (hardstone) inlays including lapis lazuli, jasper and marble, and the two-door top section conceals numerous drawers with gilt bronze figures and mounts.
The crown jewel of Michaan’s jewelry & timepieces Winter Fine Sale offerings is easily the diamond and platinum ring ($8/12,000). The diamond is exceptional and set among stunningly shiny platinum, making this ring a sure showstopper.
For the avid art collector, Michaan’s will also be offering multiple exceedingly fine works, at the top of which is a charming snail, a bronze work by Beniamino Bufano ($3/5,000). The sculpture is aptly named, for it depicts a snail in movement, and the smooth bronze gives the friendly creature an indescribable softness.
Finally, the Asian art department is proud to offer a landscape scroll, “Spring in Full Form,” by Zhao Zhenchuan ($3/5,000). Zhenchuan is part of the Chang’an School of Painting, a group that primarily focuses its art on landscapes and figures, with a secondary emphasis on flowers and birds.
