EPPING, N.H. — Devin Moisan Auctioneers will conduct a three-day auction from Friday, February 28 to Sunday, March 2. The auction comprises American, English, Continental and Asian furniture, decorative arts, rugs, coins, jewelry and paintings, spanning several centuries and crossing multiple collecting categories.
Hosted on LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable, more than 1,400 lots will be offered beginning at 10 am each day.
Americana will be represented with property from the collection of Alvan and Claude Bisnoff. The Bisnoffs were well-known collectors and personal friends of R. Scudder Smith, publisher of Antiques and The Arts Weekly. In fact, Alvan was given a lifetime free subscription to the paper. Highlights are a rare full-bodied Goddess of Liberty weathervane, as well as a folk art cut sheet metal prancing horse weathervane. There is a rare set of 19 Union Army Civil War watercolor drawings by Captain John G. Faye of New York. Painted from 1862 to 1864, the views depict the daily life of soldiers in various encampments throughout Virginia, South Carolina and Florida, with many of the locations identified. Another Civil War item from a New England home is a Federal Army snare drum, made by I.E. White of Boston. The dark blue shell is painted with a displayed eagle grasping “Union” and “Liberty” banners in its beak, beneath an arc of 13 gold stars and above a red, white and blue shield and four crossed American flags.
The auction also includes the second part of the Cortlandt and Nancy Knowles Parker collection from Greenvale Farm Estate and Vineyard in Portsmouth, R.I. A historically significant artifact from this family home is a 4th US Cavalry Civil War-era 34-star silk swallowtail guidon. Major General James Parker (1854-1934) served in the 4th US Cavalry participating in the Indian Wars of the Southwest. In May 1886, during the Apache Wars campaign, First Lieutenant Parker led troops into Mexico and assisted in the capture of Geronimo and his band. He served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War where he earned the Medal of Honor during 1899, as well as World War I. The major general’s Colt single-action Army revolver, holster and tooled western belt will be offered. His son, Major General Cortlandt Parker (1884-1960), served in France during World War I. As a major general in the US Army during World War II, he commanded the 5th Infantry Division (“Red Diamond” Division) from August 1941 to June 1943, and from 1943 to 1946 he served as commanding general of the Southern California Sector in the Western Defense Command. Hidden for decades in the immense attic and stored in numerous military footlockers, an extensive collection of military memorabilia will include campaign and service medals from both major generals, named dress and field uniforms, maps, photographs, certificates and documents.
Property from a Brookline, Mass., home features a Boston Chippendale mahogany serpentine slant-front desk that belonged to conservationist and children’s book author Thornton W. Burgess, and a Massachusetts Simon Willard tall case clock. A selection of American paintings have descended in the family and include a Pennsylvania impressionist landscape “The Fertile Valley: Haying Along the Delaware” by Arthur Meltzer, “The Old Clockmaker” by Jefferson David Chalfant, “The Road to the River” by Paul Cornoyer, “Coastal View with Rocks and Surf” by William Trost Richards and three watercolor paintings by John Whorf, including “Fisherman and Guide.”
Objects from Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century seafaring life and merchant trade include Jacob Crowninshield’s logbook for the ship Minerva of Salem, Mass., 1795-96. Entries document weather and sailing conditions, daily tasks and unusual encounters, including an attack by Madagascar pirates on January 5, 1796. The book is illustrated throughout with ink drawings depicting whales, ships, everyday items and occurrences. A painted China trade miniature portrait of a court lady and a Chinese export porcelain famille rose Luohan bowl will be offered.
The auction includes a large amount of American, English and Continental silver. An extensive Tiffany & Co. sterling silver Clinton pattern flatware service, comprising 338 pieces and weighing 381.7 troy ounces, is housed in a Tiffany & Co., mahogany canteen. Also offered is a Boston coin silver porringer by John Coburn, circa 1770, and a George II sterling silver armorial coffeepot of unusual form by Lewis Pantin I, London, 1740.
